Martin Fanning has advised public bodies, financial institutions and other large corporates on a wide range of complex information technology, intellectual property and data protection matters. His experience includes telecoms and IT services outsourcings, general sourcing and procurement arrangements, software licensing and development arrangements, content and brand licensing and data protection advice. He has a specific interest in the retail, financial services, manufacturing and transport sectors. He has also spent time on secondment at a major telecoms operator.

Dentons' first-rate team includes Martin Fanning, who 'applies a commercial mindset to legal issues'. The group assists clients with the gamut of commercial contracts in areas such as retail, aviation, healthcare and energy, among others.  Scott Singer, and senior associates Tristan Jonckheer and Nicola Harding, who assisted John Lewis Partnership with negotiating a number of major commercial deals in 2017, such as its contractual joint venture with HSBC to provide John Lewis-branded personal loans to customers. On the IT front, Dan Burge and senior associate Henrietta Baker advised EDF Energy on its application maintenance and development arrangements with TCS. Andy Lucas has a strong track record in public sector outsourcing projects, and acts for a number of government departments, including the Home Office and Ministry of Defence. Babette Märzheuser-Wood and Tatiana Kruse are also recommended. The firm expanded its offering in the Scottish market in 2017 by merging with Scottish firm Maclay Murray & Spens; the team now includes Alison Bryce and Ross Nicol, both of whom are based in Glasgow.

The data protection team at Dentons boasts an impressive client roster, which includes the additions of new clients Kelly Services and trade associations UK Finance and techUK. Practice head Nick Graham is the global chair of the firm's privacy and cybersecurity group and leads advice to John Lewis on data protection strategy, policy and data transfers issues. The department continues to act for First Data Corporation on obtaining local authorisations for its processors binding corporate rules, in addition to on GDPR compliance matters. Other key highlights include the team's work for Virgin which includes data protection governance advice in relation to Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays' privacy, advertising and marketing matters, as well as on cyber risk issues to its telephone, mobile, broadband and TV services. Martin Fanning is a key name to note and has experience advising public sector bodies and financial institutions. Simon Elliottwas recently promoted to the partnership.

Jan Willem van den Bos heads up the telecoms team and is acting for Circle Media Labs on the launch of its pioneering internet access control platform to Sky customers. In another work highlight, the practice is advising SkyKick in a trademark dispute with Sky. Martin Fanning attracts praise for his 'hands-on approach' and 'commercial mindset' in IT matters. The group is also instructed by new clients Tesla, LG and Raytheon.
