Stephen leads the Environment and Safety team in London and is co-chair of the Firm's global Environmental Law practice. His practice covers transactions, operational matters, compliance, administrative law challenges and enforcement defence. He regularly advises on environmental liability, permits and authorisations, regulatory compliance, incident response, risk analysis and management strategies, and well-to-wheel sustainability issues. With a keen eye on evolving legal trends, Stephen advises private companies on how to adapt to upcoming changes in the regulatory framework. He has considerable expertise in the oil and gas, waste, chemicals, land remediation, cleantech, water and power sectors. Stephen's contribution to the development of environmental law in the UK goes back 20 years, when he drafted the enforcement manual on the then new Contaminated Land Regime for England and Wales. Alongside his private sector work, he has maintained a development contribution, including drafting the Renewables Obligation Order for Northern Ireland, assisting the Environment Agency with the preparation of the Administrative Rules for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, and as an active member of the Environmental Services Association's Regulation Committee. Stephen's experience on the application of environmental law extends beyond the UK into the EU, Africa and the Middle East.
