Dentons significantly expanded its tax practice with the hire of Vasilii Markov and his team from Deloitte Legal and four other practitioners from various firms, including transfer pricing specialist Natalia Bulygina, who joined from KPMG Russia. The 'professional' team, which is led by Dzhangar Dzhalchinov, is praised for 'analysing not only the case but the problem as a whole', 'understanding the needs of a business' and for 'providing sound and reliable legal advice through a tailored approach'. Dzhalchinov has a strong reputation as a tax litigator, in one example he represented Suek before the Supreme Court in a landmark thin capitalisation case, and was able to reverse the earlier judgments of the lower courts. In other matters, he represented Cargill in a dispute concerning the recovery of VAT related to the construction of a public infrastructure project. Markov heads the St Petersburg tax practice where he specialises in domestic tax regulation, corporate taxation and restructuring. Counsel Igor Schikow focuses on cross-border transactions and defence in tax audits and is lauded for his 'attention to detail and outstanding personalised support and involvement at every stage'. Of counsel Anna Zvereva was a new arrival from Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (Russia) LLP in March 2019.
