Position

Bruce Merlin Fried counsels and represents health plans, physician organizations, hospital groups, consumer organizations, health care information technology companies, pharmaceutical and biotech companies and other health care organizations with regard to federal health care programs and policies.

Career

Bruce is the managing partner of the firm's Washington DC office. Before joining Dentons he served as the Health Care Financing Administration's (HCFA, now CMS) Director of the Center for Health Plans and Providers. Prior to that, Bruce was director of HCFA's Office of Managed Care. Before joining the government, Bruce was Vice President of Federal Affairs at one of the nation's largest managed care organizations. From 1990 to 1994, Bruce was executive vice president of The Wexler Group where he counseled and represented insurers, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, clinicians, consumer groups and philanthropies on legislative and regulatory matters.

Dentons’ department covers the full gamut of work for health insurers including transactions, regulatory mandates and insurance litigation. In a recent highlight, practice co-chair Bruce Baty and Jodi Adolf in Kansas City advised the Medical Protective Company on the design and implementation of reinsurance programs for healthcare facilities; the pair also acted for Luxottica and EyeMed Vision Care on its vision plans and various compliance issues. Other key names include San Francisco-based Michael Barnes and Bruce Merlin Fried in Washington DC. In March 2019, former practice co-head Kara Baysinger in San Francisco and New York-based Matthew Gaul moved to Mayer Brown.
