The ‘excellent’ Allen & Overy LLP continued its growth strategy by adding former Freehills partner Adam Stapledon to its banking and finance team in April 2011. The team he joined is commended generally for its ‘quality advice and depth of market knowledge’, with Chris Robertson, Angela Flannery, Jason Huinink and Grant Fuzi all recommended. The group advised a number of banks on the corporate finance aspects of the $45bn loan facility to finance BHP Billiton’s hostile bid for PotashCorp.

Allen & Overy LLP added significant weight to its competition group through the lateral hire of ‘leading practitioner’ Dave Poddar, an expert on merger clearance and cartel matters. Clients include Wesfarmers, Xstrata SAB and Port Waratah.

Since its entry into the Australian market, Allen & Overy LLP has carved a solid reputation and continues to grow, which is a necessity as it ‘can get stretched thin fairly quickly’. Dave Poddar joined the Sydney office from Mallesons Stephen Jaques, adding his expertise as a competition lawyer specialising in M&A. Other key individuals include Michael Parshall, a ‘leading M&A lawyer with an ability to solve unique issues’, and ‘the great’ Aaron Kenavan. Poddar, Parshall and Kenavan led the advice to SABMiller on its A$11.2bn proposed acquisition of Foster’s Group. Grant Koch is also recommended.

Allen & Overy LLP has secured a number of M&A and financing mandates in this space from Equinox Minerals, and from Lanco Infratech, which it is advising on the acquisition of coal mines from Griffin Coal. Geoff Simpson and the ‘very responsive and knowledgeable’ Barry Irwin are recommended. Oil and gas specialist Angus Jones joined from Allens Arthur Robinson.

Allen & Overy LLP and Norton Rose Australia continue to gain traction in the market, particularly in the banking and finance space, although each with a slightly different focus; the former concentrating on high-end financial work and the latter seeking to access the wider Asian market. In 2011, DLA Phillips Fox formally integrated with the global DLA Piper LLP network to create DLA Piper Australia.
