Foreign firms
Within Foreign firms, Allen & Overy LLP is a first tier firm,
Allen & Overy LLP’s decision to open a Doha office has been rewarded over the past year by the significant increase in volume of work the firm is picking up in banking, capital markets, dispute resolution, and corporate spheres in Qatar. It now plans significantly to increase its presence in Doha and has set up a dedicated corporate practice, led by Chris Thornes, and a funds practice, led by managing partner Robert Porter. Samer Eido’s arrival from Simmons & Simmons Middle East LLP has brought partner numbers on the ground up to three and bolstered the firm’s finance and Qatari law capability. Recent highlights include advising export credit agencies on the Barzan gas project and advising Qatar Holding LLC, the wholly owned subsidiary of sovereign wealth fund Qatar Investment Authority, on matters pertaining to $1.7bn and CHF2.5bn bonds held by it.
Legal market overview
Within Legal market overview,
Several leading international law firms are consolidating their positions in the market, although the influence of some others is waning and there are also new entrants. Allen & Overy LLP’s decision to open an office in Doha is paying dividends and the firm added a third partner on the ground when it recruited the highly regarded Samer Eido, formerly Simmons & Simmons Middle East LLP’s Middle East financial markets head. In May 2011, Eversheds LLP completed a merger with law group KSLG (in association with Dhabaan & Partners), bringing into the fold four new offices to complement the firm’s existing Middle East presence, which now spans five countries. McGrigors LLP - QFC Branch opened its doors in Doha in March 2011.
