Barlow Lyde & Gilbert’s practice operates out of Hong Kong but carries out substantial PRC work. The firm recently advised Pauls’ Model Art (PMA) on its dispute with manufacturers for the completion and delivery of moulds and line toolings for the manufacture of model cars. For KPMG, it defended allegations of negligence arising out of its audit of Moulin Global Eyecare. David Smyth heads the group, which also includes Tom Ffyfe and Richard Keady.

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert was boosted by the arrival of Matthew Durham, previously practice head at Simmons & Simmons, to lead the employment team. As well as extensive employment law experience in China, Durham also offers general corporate expertise to a strong client following, which primarily comprises multinationals from the financial, life sciences, retail and industrial sectors. Managing partner Brinton Scott also frequently deals with employment matters in the context of corporate and commercial work. Clients include Best Buy, GlaxoSmithKline and Bombardier.

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP similarly launched a Hong Kong law practice when it hired Norton Rose LLP’s China corporate finance head, Freeman Chan. In November 2011, UK firms Barlow Lyde & Gilbert and Clyde & Co are due to complete their global merger, the newly combined firm retaining the name of Clyde & Co. Both firms are already present in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and the union is expected to boost the firm’s presence in the region.
