Clifford Chance LLP has ‘a great reputation for capital markets work’, particularly on the underwriter side. That said, in 2008 the practice advised Noble Group on US law regarding its issue of $500m 8.5% Senior Notes due 2013, one of the few successful high yield debt deals closed in Asia that year. With a ‘long history in China and a great M&A team’, Clifford Chance LLP secured a number of the market leading China-outbound deals of 2008, including advising Chinalco on its (ultimately unsuccessful) $19.5bn strategic investment in Rio Tinto. The team also advised China Oilfield Services on its $2.5bn acquisition of Oslo-listed Awilco Offshore. Clients single out Shanghai-based Emma Davies as ‘a really outstanding practitioner’.

Clifford Chance LLP experienced an uptick in arbitrations and litigation arising out of oil and gas and private equity-related disputes, but had a busy 2008 across China and Hong Kong offices, with IP another area of particular specialty. The ‘wonderfully good’ team expanded significantly in Hong Kong with the hires of Brian Gilchrist and Elaine Chen, both formerly of Mayer Brown JSM.

Clifford Chance LLP is rated as a ‘specialist China firm’ with ‘great size and depth’ in its energy practice. The team advised EDF on its joint venture with China Guangdong Nuclear Power to construct, operate and maintain two reactors in Taishan, in what is reported to be the largest ever inbound investment into China. The practice also represented China Development Bank as mandated lead arranger of financing for the $11bn Central Asia-China natural gas pipeline. In total, the firm worked on over $100bn of mainland China policy bank financing in the energy and infrastructure field in 2008.
