Clifford Chance Law Office

What we say about the firm's legal practice in Japan

Banking and finance

Within Banking and finance - International firms and joint ventures, Clifford Chance is a second tier firm,

Although it maintained a steady deal flow during challenging market conditions, Clifford Chance Law Office’s Tokyo banking and finance capabilities have been reduced by Tim Jeffares’ relocation to the Frankfurt office in 2008 and David Wilson’s departure from the firm in 2009. The remaining team includes regulatory expert Masayuki Okamoto and the ‘effective and experienced’ Tokyo managing partner Peter Kilner who ‘gives the right advice at the right time’ and is ‘ably assisted by a leading group of bengoshi’. As well as continuing to advise longstanding banking clients Citibank, UBS and Merrill Lynch across a range of mandates, the practice also recently represented JPMorgan as lead arrangers on a $1.8bn refinancing facility for Sony. Hidehiko Suzuki is also recommended.

Capital markets

Within Capital markets - International firms and joint ventures, Clifford Chance is a second tier firm,

Clifford Chance Law Office has the capability to offer an array of structured products and debt and equity capital markets expertise in tandem with a ‘dedicated and timely service’. The ‘extremely clever’ Peter Kilner heads a four-partner practice that was bolstered in 2008 by the arrival of Reiko Sakimura who joined the team from Linklaters. Recent highlights include advising Deutsche Bank as arranger in Toyota Industries $1bn MTN programme.

Corporate and M&A

Within Corporate and M&A - International firms and joint ventures, Clifford Chance is a second tier firm,

Very few firms have the spread of local and international law capabilities that Clifford Chance Law Office is able to wield. The group hired three bengoshi in 2008/09, adding to ranks already swollen with domestic corporate law expertise. Paul O’Regan heads the five-partner practice and provides ‘outstanding legal service’ with ‘great attention to detail’. In 2008, O’Regan acted alongside Naoki Watanabe to provide international and local law advice to Canadoil on the acquisition of Japanese manufacturer Benex. The team also advised NTT Data on the disposition of shares in NTT Data Financial.

Dispute resolution

Within Dispute resolution - International firms and joint ventures, Clifford Chance is a third tier firm,

Jim Jamison’s relocation in early 2009 to Clifford Chance Law Office’s Tokyo office to head its litigation group has greatly advanced its capabilities. The group’s five partners ‘are completely amazing as lawyers and great individuals to work with’, and provide a full dispute resolution service for an array of international and Japanese clients.

The main statutes relating to employment are the Portuguese Employment Code (approved by Law 7/2009 of 12 February 2009) and the Regulation of the Employment Code (Law 35/2004 of 29 July 2004) which is still in force notwithstanding the fact that parts have been revoked with the entry into force of the new Employment Code.
