Position

Senior partner. Pablo Mir leads the Mining; Energy & Natural Resources practice area of BMAJ. His practice focuses on Natural Resources, Mining and Energy, and Public Works Concessions.

Career

Pablo has advised several mining companies and mining investments banks in their projects in Chile, as well as in Argentina, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. He led the team that obtained approval for the first exploration project under the Chile-Argentina Mining Treaty. He led the legal team that constructed the Gas Pacífico pipeline transporting natural gas from Argentina to the 8th Region of Chile. Pablo has participated as consultant to several work groups and commissions of the Chilean Government to improve mining and energy regulations. He is also a frequent speaker in international mining law conferences and seminars.

Pablo is a Member of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, theInternational Mining Professionals Society (IMPS), and the Latin American Mining Lawyers (AMLA). He is also a member of the International Bar Association’sSection on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure (SEERIL), the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). In Chile, he is a member of the Chilean Bar Association and the legal affairs commission of the National Mining Association (SONAMI).

Education

Pablo received his J.D. degree, cum laude, from the Universidad de Chile.

Bofill, Mir & Álvarez Jana has particular expertise in mining-related projects, but the practice is also well known for advising on power generation facilities, ports, airports, and real estate developments. Significant clients include  Innovación Energía (IE), Oceanus Power & Water, EuroAmérica, Ferrostaal and Eléctrica Puntilla; the team assisted IE, a joint venture between Energía Latina and Empresas Gasco, with the development of an electricity generation plant. Pablo Mir, Alejandro Álvarez, Octavio Bofill and Alejandro Álvarez are all highly regarded. Ana María Yuri and José Antonio Velasco are also key contacts.

Bofill, Mir & Álvarez Jana's specialist, seven-strong mining team regularly works alongside the firm's regulatory, environmental, corporate, tax, labour and dispute resolution departments. Recent work highlights included advising Japanese mining company Sumitomo Metal Mining on its acquisition of 30 per cent of the Quebrada Blanca mine from Canadian mining company Teck Resources; and acting for Molyb (Codelco) on the construction and development of a molybdenum recovery plant. It also assisted Australia-based private equity group EMR Capital with its $230m acquisition of the Cerro Colorado mine from BHP Billiton. Pablo Mir and Rony Zimerman are highly-rated advisers, and Felipe Allende is noted for financing, transactional and contractual matters. Other team members include senior associates Joaquín Perez and Teresita González.
