Position

Partner. Mr. Zimerman practices in the areas of natural resources and energy law as well as in the areas of corporate/commercial and real estate law. He regularly advises foreign investors into Chile on natural resources and energy projects, as well in mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations and cross border joint ventures. 

Career

Prior to jointing BMAJ, Mr. Zimerman practiced in the corporate and securities area of Lang Michener (McMillan) in Vancouver, Canada. Mr. Zimerman has been a lecturer in the Universidad de Chile and American University’s joint U.S. Business Law LL.M. Program (2006-2008, 2010-present).

Mr. Zimerman is co-chair of the International Energy and Natural Resources Committee of the American Bar Association Section of International Law, since August 2014. He is a member of the Chilean and the American Bar Association, the International Mining Professionals Society (IMPS), the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada and the International Bar Association section on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law.

Education

Mr. Zimerman obtained his B.A.(honors) from the McGill University in Montreal, Canada (1990) and received his LL.B. (JD equivalent) from the University of British Columbia Law School, Canada (1994). He also obtained a J.D. degree from the Universidad Finis Terrae, Santiago, Chile (2004).

Acting for institutional investors, insurance companies and public funds, Bofill, Mir & Álvarez Jana’s 24-strong practice group has significant experience in structuring banking and finance transactions, which frequently involve complex cross-border issues. The practice’s typical work includes leveraged finance, real estate and project finance, and syndicated loans, along with corporate restructuring and insolvency, equity and debt offerings, and structured finance. José Antonio Velasco and Alejandro Álvarez advised Pacific Hydro Chile on the implementation of a new $500m global funding platform from an international consortium of banks, to provide financing across a portfolio of renewable energy assets. The team also counselled Bice Vida Compañía de Seguros (as lender) in a $51.5m real estate financing agreement with Sencorp and Sura Asset Management for a project in Santiago. Octavio Bofill and Ana María Yuri head the team and Rony Zimerman is also highly rated. Jorge Lembeye left to establish Lembeye & Cía.

Bofill, Mir & Álvarez Jana’s mining team can draw on the firm’s regulatory, environmental, corporate, tax, labour and dispute resolution groups regarding its clients’ projects in Chile and Latin America. In recent matters the team acted for Barrick Gold Corporation (as part of a joint venture agreement with Goldcorp), regarding the operation of a gold and copper deposit project in northern Chile; advised Nutrex, a US-based mining exploration company on its acquisition of mining concessions and project assets; and assisted Laguna Gold with the acquisition of Chile’s El Toqui underground mine. Other active practice clients include Exeter Resource Corporation, Allied Salt, Rio Explorations, Sociedad Contractual Minera Atacama Minerals Chile, and Codelco.
