Senior partner. He coleads the Corporate practice area of BMAJ. His practice focuses on Corporate and Commercial Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, Banking, Finance and Securities, Regulated Markets and Telecommunications.


He previously worked at Jorge Bofill Vergara (1983-1987), the Chilean Army (1985-1987) and the firms Magasich & Cía. (1987-1990), Slaughter & May, London (1994), Allgemeines Treuunternehmen, Liechtenstein (1994) and Grasty Quintana Majlis & Cía. (1990 -2006). Mr. Bofill is a Professor of Corporate Law, Universidad de Chile, since 1992.

Member of the Panel of Arbitration and Mediation Center of Santiago’s Chambers of Commerce since 2009 and also Member of the Panel of Arbitration of Concessions Agreements of the Ministry of Public Works since 2010. Is a member of the Chilean Bar Association and the Chilean Institute of Trade Law.


Mr. Bofill received his J.D. degree, cum laude, from Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.

Acting for institutional investors, insurance companies and public funds, Bofill, Mir & Álvarez Jana’s 24-strong practice group has significant experience in structuring banking and finance transactions, which frequently involve complex cross-border issues. The practice’s typical work includes leveraged finance, real estate and project finance, and syndicated loans, along with corporate restructuring and insolvency, equity and debt offerings, and structured finance. José Antonio Velasco and Alejandro Álvarez advised Pacific Hydro Chile on the implementation of a new $500m global funding platform from an international consortium of banks, to provide financing across a portfolio of renewable energy assets. The team also counselled Bice Vida Compañía de Seguros (as lender) in a $51.5m real estate financing agreement with Sencorp and Sura Asset Management for a project in Santiago. Octavio Bofill and Ana María Yuri head the team and Rony Zimerman is also highly rated. Jorge Lembeye left to establish Lembeye & Cía.

Bofill, Mir & Álvarez Jana’s antitrust team is known for its competition expertise in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, automobiles, media and telecoms, and it stands out for its international trade remedy experience. Guillermo de la Jara led advice to Fresenius Medical Care Chile on an unfair competition claim filed against it by a Chilean competitor. The practice also advised major Mexican steel producer Deacero in its defence against dumping charges. Octavio Bofill is the key adviser.

Bofill, Mir & Álvarez Jana’s practice handles both domestic and cross-border M&A transactions, joint ventures and strategic alliances; it also assists with related financial, tax and corporate governance matters and regulatory issues. Recent mandates saw name partner and practice co-head Octavio Bofill advise two subsidiaries of Chilean food and beverage conglomerate CCU, on the $36.7m sale of baked-goods company Alimentos Nutra Bien to Mexican bakery conglomerate Grupo Bimbo (although as of May 2018, it appears that the transaction has been halted by competition regulator, FNE). His fellow departmental co-head, Alejandro Álvarez, assisted Pacific Hydro with the $43.7m acquisition of the equity interest in the 111MW power generation plant Pacific Hydro Chacayes held by Astaldi-affiliate, Cachapoal Inversiones. Ana María Yuri, Rodrigo Saffirio and recently promoted partner José Antonio Velasco are highly rated practitioners. Jorge Lembeye exited to found Lembeye & Cía.

The team acted for Globalsat Latam in its bid to Chile’s public procurement system to provide satellite communications services across the country. Octavio Bofill is also a key contact.
