Jaime Ríos has been a partner in Prieto since the year 1994. He joined the firm in 1981.

He is legal counsel to national and foreign clients in the design and definition of strategies for complex transactions and businesses.

He is actively involved in several areas of the firm and has considerable experience in the capital market, in insurance and reinsurance, in mergers and acquisitions, and in the financing of projects and infrastructure works.

He is also well known for representing major power generation and distribution companies in the electrical sector.

He held the office of Insurance Commissioner in the Securities and Insurance Commission.

Prieto has significant M&A experience in complex cross-border deals, private equity transactions and joint ventures. The team was recently particularly active in transactions in the insurance, social security funds-management and energy sectors, and it also has significant retail-sector experience. In addition, the M&A group benefits from the firm’s tax, labour, corporate, environmental and litigation departments. Highlights included advising Inversiones La Construcción, the Chilean-based holding of Chilean pension fund AFP Habitat, on its association agreement with Prudential Financial, the insurance and pension funds group. It also assisted Chile’s Watt’s with the acquisition of Danone’s business in Chile. Department head Juan Tagle and Fernando Bravo are recommended, along with ‘excellent lawyer’ Cristóbal Villarino and Jaime Ríos, who ‘knows almost everything about corporate law and is creative and innovative when solving M&A problems’. Prieto’s client base includes insurance companies, re-insurance companies and insurance brokers. The firm acts in insurance claims and insurance recoveries in relation to risks, such as fire, earthquake and business interruption; and it is also recommended for its negotiation of tailor-made insurance policies and advising in claims adjusting processes. In addition, the practice has extensive experience in dealing with Chile’s insurance market regulator, the Superintendence of Securities and Insurance, with regard to the formation of insurance companies, drafting new policies, compliance, and risk management programmes. The team acts for Assurant Chile Compañía de Seguros Generales on an ongoing basis; and assists Colmena Compañía de Seguros de Vida with compliance matters, insurance product distribution, policy drafting and claims procedures. Prieto has longstanding expertise in the energy, gas and water and sewage sectors; the practice has robust experience in advising developers and owners on renewable energy projects, and its regulatory and litigation team regularly acts on administrative procedures, disputes and arbitrations in the energy sector. The team acted for Engie Energía Chile in an electricity transmission-line project bidding, which aimed to select a strategic partner for its subsidiary Transmisora Eléctrica del Norte; the firm’s role included assisting with the transference of shares to the awarded bidder and corporate governance issues. The key advisers include Claudio Undurraga, Jaime Ríos and Fernando Bravo, along with Juan Tagle and José Andrés Pascual.
