What we say about the firm's legal practice in Ireland

Banking and finance

The newly arrived Walkers has a wealth of asset finance expertise with a particular focus on aircraft financing. Ken Rush leads the team, which advised Global Aviation Asset Management on corporate and finance aspects of the $1.4bn sale of an aircraft-leasing platform.

Capital markets

Within Capital markets, Walkers is a second tier firm,

Walkers has quickly established a credible presence in Dublin including a tightly focused debt capital markets team. Highlights included being sole Irish counsel for BNY Mellon’s trustee and agency activities in Ireland on 19 different transactions, and advising Natixis on a large leveraged financing of a pan-European mortgaged backed capital markets deal. Garry Ferguson is highly regarded.

Investment funds

Within Investment funds, Walkers is a third tier firm,

Walkers recruited Paul Farrell from Matheson Ormsby Prentice to lead its growing Dublin team, which advised Blue Alpha on the first redomiciliation of a UCITS fund from Jersey to Ireland.

Legal market overview

Within Legal market overview,

The alternative investment market remains a stalwart source of work in Ireland with offshore funds increasingly ‘onshoring’ their products to take advantage of the lower corporate tax rates and a better regulated market. Both Dechert LLP and Walkers have started to establish local practices with launches in Dublin. Walkers turned to domestic firms Matheson Ormsby Prentice and William Fry for a series of eye-catching hires, and Maples and Calder recruited Stephen Carty from Eversheds. It seems unlikely that there will be any more new international entrants into an already overcrowded Dublin.

Tax

Within Tax, Walkers is a third tier firm,

William Fry’s tax head Martin Phelan advised HMV on designing and implementing a number of IP migrations for UK and US listed companies, one of the few Irish firms to handle this type of work. It also advised Fairfax Financial Holdings and WL Ross on tax aspects of the acquisition of a 34.9% stake in Bank of Ireland. Anthony Smyth joined Walkers.
