Position

Anthony Markham’s general experience is wide-ranging, with specialisations in the following areas: South African international tax and exchange control; UK international taxation for non-domiciliaries and their offshore trusts; international trusts and trustees; family offices; inter-generational inheritance and succession planning for wealthy families; private equity investment and remuneration structures; inward investment into Africa; and art law. Anthony has more than 20 years of experience as an external international adviser and five years of experience as a legal counsel to a multinational family office. He has a depth of experience in the issues which face international wealthy families and particular experience in managing the transition of wealth between generations. This includes negotiating the allocation of wealth and control with incoming family branches and members and addressing associated governance, fiduciary, tax and regulatory issues.

Career

After qualifying in England and South Africa, Anthony joined Maitland (or its precursor) in 1983 in Luxembourg, became a partner in 1986, moved to the Isle of Man to open the Maitland office there in 1990, moved with Maitland to London in 2000, joined the E Oppenheimer & Son Family office in 2001, and returned to Maitland as a consultant in 2005.

Education

Anthony obtained a first class degree in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University (Balliol College) and a B Proc from the University of South Africa. He is an English solicitor (admitted 1980) and a South African attorney (not practising, admitted 1983).
