Michael Stepek is an international arbitration partner with more than 30 years of experience in international law. He focuses on complex, high-value disputes involving the control of corporate entities, foreign direct investment, concession agreements, major infrastructure projects, and joint ventures in the energy, mining, telecommunications, and transportation industries.

Michael represents clinets before numerous international forums in arbitrations conducted pursuant to all the major institutional rules including ICSID, ICC, LCIA, HKIAC, SCC, and UNCITRAL.  


Michael is an adjunct faculty member of the Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy, an organisation that provides practical trial skills to international arbitration lawyers. He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Institute for Transnational Arbitration and a founder of the Institute for Law and Development Policy, an NGO focused on providing legal practitioners to various publicly and privately funded, rule-of-law programs in post-conflict states.

A substantial part of the London's group includes the representation of clients in large-scale infrastructure disputes as well as cases involving traditional and renewable energy power, and transportation projects. The London team is led by Michael Stepek and Matthew Bate; Stepek led advice to Rolling Vista Ventures  in an arbitration proceeding under the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre arbitration rules, which arose out of a master investment and shareholder agreement. Ricardo Ugarte divides time between Chicago and London; and senior associate Daniel Meagher is 'a standout arbitration lawyer and a very strong operator'. Other key advisers are of counsel Kseniya Elfimova, who divides her time between London and Brussels, and associate Shayan Farhad.

With excellent cross-border capabilities, the team at Winston & Strawn London LLP regularly handles corporate work, regulatory matters and litigation in numerous sports. Michael Stepek acted for Bulgarian football club CSKA Sofia in an appeal against UEFA before the CAS, regarding the team's eligibility to play in the 2017-'18 and 2018-'19 Europa League tournaments despite its insolvency in 2016. On the transactional side, Nicholas Usher advised one of the main shareholders in Swansea City FC on the club's sale to a group of US private equity investors. Department head Peter Crowther, who splits his time between London and Brussels, continued to advise the British Athletes Commission (BAC) on issues affecting elite athletes, such as duty of care, selection matters, anti-doping, and communications with governing bodies. Competition expert Jade-Alexandra Fearns is an associate recommended for regulatory and disciplinary matters.
