Soo-Jin Shim leads Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP's team in Asia. Shim advises private equity sponsors and corporate borrowers (including Chinese outbound investors) on their most strategically important and structurally challenging financing requirements, and assists financial institutions with their most complex transactions. Shim is particularly active in cross-border matters involving margin loans and leveraged and acquisition finance transactions, and she also has expertise in financings connected with corporate restructurings. Associate Rick Wei is another notable individual in the team, which recently assisted Hong Kong-listed PRC company Shandong Weigao Group Medical Polymer with the financing aspects of its acquisition of US company Argon Medical Devices Holdings. Another highlight involved advising Baring Private Equity Asia and MBK Partners on the $200m bridge-to-bond facilities associated with the take-private of eHi Car Services by a consortium of investors; this is one of the first bridge-to-bond financings of its kind in Asia. Advent International, Hillhouse Capital and TPG Capital are among other active clients. Counsel Eng-Lye Ong left to join Dechert.

Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP

Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP is well-known for its work in big-ticket, structurally complex, multi-jurisdictional deals spanning the Asia-Pacific market. Its excellent reputation is reflected by its client roster, which includes names such as GE, HNA Group and Suez Environnement. Showcasing the firm's profile in high-end deals, Charles Ching (who divides time between the Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing offices) and associate Kris Desrosiers were among the advisers to Shanghai Pharmaceuticals on its £1.2bn acquisition of the China distribution business of US-based Cardinal Health; this was one of the largest healthcare transactions in Asia in 2017, involved multiple jurisdictions and a highly competitive auction process. In addition, Tim Gardner and Desrosiers acted for Alibaba Group on the $1bn merger of two Asian logistics companies, China-based 58 Suyun (a freight unit of online marketplace 58.com) and Hong Kong start-up GoGoVan. Henry Ong, who has more than 25 years of experience in Hong Kong M&A and Asian cross-border transactions, and recently promoted partner Chris Welty advised GIC on the sale of its interests in Swiss duty-free operator Dufry to Hongkong Huihaisheng Investment (a subsidiary of HNA Group). Akiko Mikumo, who had been the Hong Kong office head and Asia managing partner, has stepped down and retired from private practice. Gardner and Ching now jointly lead the firm's Asia operations, with Gardner having succeeded Mikumo as Hong Kong managing partner, and Ching being the China managing partner.

Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP

Although it is somewhat smaller than some of its peers in the upper echelons of the rankings, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP's two-partner Hong Kong team is a vital part of the firm's 'top-drawer' global private equity offering, and regularly handles matters on its own or in concert with other offices for a plethora of leading local and international sponsors including Advent, Baring Private Equity Asia, Hillhouse Capital and EQT Capital Partners. Tim Gardner is 'a very effective operator' and is regularly at the forefront of the most significant mandates handled by the team; he acted for Hillhouse Capital Group, as part of a consortium including FountainVest Partners, on the $1bn take-private of Zhaopin, the operator of an online recruitment platform in China. Alongside Chris Welty, Gardner also recently advised MBK Partners and Baring Private Equity Asia as part of a consortium on the proposed $937.5m take-private of eHi Car Services. Akiko Mikumo recently retired.
