John Ohaga, managing partner

Managing partner John Ohaga explains how TripleOkLaw Advocates LLP is adapting to clients' changing needs.

What do you see as the main points that differentiate TripleOKLAW LLP from your competitors?

We have a stellar reputation for providing efficient, effective and competent legal services in all aspects of commercial law including our top-notch litigation and dispute resolution practice. However, as a firm, we have three core values we always observe to give the best possible service to our clients.

  • Commitment to excellent customer / client experience
  • Commitment to Going Over and Above for our clients
  • Having a client centered focus on practice
Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?
Telecommunications, Technology and Media:

Today, the Telecommunications, Technology and Media industry is a colossal practice area that has become instrumental in the corporate and commercial sector all over the world. There has been a tremendous growth in the need for legal services in this area.

The key driver for this area is the growth and expansion of Cybersecurity as one of the fastest growing, if not the fastest growing, area of IT at the moment. With that comes an incredible opportunity for growth for vendor startups and solution providers alike.

International Arbitration:

Kenya recently established the Nairobi International Arbitration Centre (NIAC) which will offer world class international Arbitration Centre services henceforth. The Government of Kenya has already indicated that all agreements to which it is party to must contain arbitration clauses with the NIAC as the center of arbitration.

Public Private Partnerships:

Kenya has climbed 21 places in the 2017 World Bank Global Ease of Doing Business Survey and is currently ranked as the world’s third most reformed country. We expect to see an increase in Public Private Partnerships as a result.

What's the main change you've made in the firm that will benefit clients?

There are a few changes we have made in our firm to better cater to the constantly evolving needs of our clients. They include:

  • Creation of a dedicated Telecommunications, Technology and Media Department.
  • Creation of a dedicated Public Private Partnerships Department.
  • Creation of a dedicated Project finance and Mergers & Acquisitions Department.

These changes aim to provide a holistic practice that would enable us to meet the diverse needs of our clients.

Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?

Yes.

TripleOkLaw LLP frequently partners with technology providers such as Microsoft to deliver & develop practical legal solutions to problems that afflict clients. In addition to that the ease and speed of communication has increased leading to an increase in quality and quantity of work output. The firm has invested heavily in cloud computing and instant file-share services that ensure that our Advocates can retrieve, edit and share documents remotely.

These technological developments have changed our interaction with our clients as we can be more responsive and flexible in our work and access to documents.

Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

In 2016, we represented a major insurance company in a corporate fraud case. Although the initial instructions had been to coordinate criminal investigation and indictment of the perpetrators, we managed to ensure that the client received a substantial portion of the misappropriated funds from the perpetrators who all resigned & settled the matters amicably in exchange for charges being dropped.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms - where do you see the firm in three years’ time

Yes, they are.

We are currently increasing our manpower by about 20% in the short term & expect to expand this by slightly over 40% in the next 3 to 5 years. This will enable us to better meet our client’s needs by providing additional niche practice areas and increasing our capacity. At TripleOKLaw LLP, we are committed to always going over and above to exceed client expectations.
