Richard is a Senior Associate in our Human Resources Practice Group who has specialised in Employment Law for over 12 years.

Richard acts for a variety of clients in the private and public sectors. He is also a member of our immigration team, helping clients ensure that they comply with immigration rules and their licenced sponsor obligations when bringing employees to the UK.

Richard advises on a wide range of contentious matters. He is an experienced Tribunal advocate with a particular interest in complex discrimination and whistleblowing claims. He also routinely advises on restrictive covenants, executive serverance agreements and high value breach of contract claims.

Richard also advises on non-contentious issues including executive service agreements, reorganisations (including changes to terms and conditions and collective redundancies) and TUPE transfers, providing pragmatic solutions for his clients. Richard undertook a secondment to a multinational company which provided a unique insight into the legal and commercial issues facing management teams.

Richard has advised many clients on the Modern Slavery Act 2015. This has included advising on preparing to publishing a first Modern Slavery statement and advising on strategies for assessing and managing supply chain risk. Richard has considerable expertise in drafting associated documents including supplier codes of conduct, policy statements, third party questionnaires and supplier contract terms.

Richard speaks regularly at public training sessions and delivers bespoke training to the HR and management teams of large plc clients.

Richard has a good level of spoken Spanish and Italian having gained a degree in Modern Languages from the University of Durham.

Many of Tom Bray’s clients are major global entities including Heathrow Airport, which he continues to represent on all its employment tribunals and industrial relations needs. ‘Outstanding’ team head Anthony Rees provides ‘responsive and solution-focused advice’ across a range of contentious and non-contentious work for both private and public sector clients; he recently successfully defended global motor manufacturing company Toyoda Gosei against claims of victimisation, race discrimination and breach of contract. Other recommended practitioners include Huw Rolant Jones, who leads on all the public sector mandates handled by the group; ‘impressive’ senior associate Richard Woodhead , who provides ‘sensitive and sensible advice’ on complex discrimination and whistleblowing claims; and legal director Helen Mortlock , who handles employment work for the firm’s higher education clients.
