Arren is an principal associate in our Real Estate Litigation group. He specialises in a wide range of real estate litigation matters and regularly acts for commercial and residential developers, land owners, corporate occupiers and local authorities.

His recent experience includes:

  • settling a substantial dilapidations claim on a landmark building for a well known developer,
  • successfully acting for a local authority in obtaining a nil determination in an expert determination process brought against it claiming in excess of £1million for breach of contract in connection with a significant town centre regeneration scheme,
  • successfully acting for a Higher Education College in ensuring performance by a developer of a conditional purchase agreement and thus ensuring over £6million became payable to the College; and
  • securing a Court Order for the removal of electricity cables which were blighting a large development site.

Arren has been involved in a number of reported cases, including CFW Architects v Cowlin Construction and Metro Nominees (Wandsworth)(No 1) Limited v Raymont.

Arren has also developed particular water industry sector expertise, regularly acting for Severn Trent Water and Anglian Water Group.

Other clients with whom Arren regularly works include Lloyds Banking Group, Wolseley Group, Henderson, Gladedale Homes and Urban Splash.

He has written published articles on landlord and tenant issues and also adverse possession and has delivered training to a number of real estate clients and intermediaries.

Arren is a member of the Property Litigation Association.

Below partner level, senior associate Rob Holloway  represents Safestore in seeking to injunct a private road owner from interfering with a right to park outside Safestore’s Acton facility by maintaining segregated pedestrian walkways, and advises a Westfield-Hammerson joint venture regarding vacant possession to facilitate a redevelopment of the Whitgift Shopping Centre. Principal associate Arren Thornton advised United Utilities Water on a rating appeal of its entire network, securing a refund of £7m.
