Simon is a partner in our litigation and dispute management group. He heads the construction and engineering team in the North. He specialises in construction and engineering contracts, capital assets procurement, framework contracts, construction litigation, arbitration, adjudication, mediation, early neutral evaluation and other forms of ADR. he has particular expertise in the education, energy and nuclear sectors.

His recent experience includes:

advising Manchester City Council on the construction contracts for its £150 million refurbishment and partial restoration of the iconic Grade II* listed Town Hall Extension, Central Library and St. Peters Square;

advising a uranium enrichment processing business on the construction and engineering contracts for the design, construction and supply of the process equipment for its £350 million Tails Management Facility; and

advising a developer on the successful defence of a £5 million contractor's claim for loss and expense, variations, preliminary/prolongation costs and delay and disruption involving seven adjudications, two arbitrations and an application to appeal which was reported.

He is regarded by Legal 500 and Chambers legal directories as a leading individual, recommended for providing "a 'first-class' service across a range of complex projects, and has 'excellent knowledge'".

Simon was awarded a Masters degree in Construction Law and Arbitration from Leeds Metropolitan University with a distinction. He now  lectures on that course. He is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

The 'good all-round team' at Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP advises a range of educational institutions including universities and educational bodies on matters ranging from setting up overseas establishments to the merger of schools. Its comprehensive expertise spans high-level policy advice, in addition to advisory and disputes matters. It acted for a number of further education colleges on their extensive work participating in the national Strategic Area Review and also acted for the Association of Colleges and Havering Sixth Form College on a judicial review challenge to the decision of the Department for Education to approve a new sixth form college at a school in the Borough of Havering. Key team members include Glynne Stanfield, Alison Oldfield and Nicola Bennison. Simon Chamberlain specialises in property-related matters, and Ben Wood handles employment and governance. With a 'national reputation', Diane Gilhooley is the well-known head of the firm’s national and international education sector group.

Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP is regularly engaged on a range of contentious and non-contentious construction work and the team is noted for its procurement expertise. The infrastructure, energy, transport and real estate sectors are key areas of expertise for the department. The team advised Network Rail Infrastructure on a the electrification and upgrade of the Transpennine Route from Manchester Victoria to Leeds and York and is instructed by Manchester City Council on its £330m project to refurbish Manchester Town Hall.  It is also advising National Grid on the construction of a sub-sea electricity cable connecting the Shetland Islands with the Scottish mainland electricity transmission network.  Simon Chamberlain is head of construction and engineering in the North and is experienced in contentious and non-contentious construction matters. Chris Pickens advises on the procurement of infrastructure projects and recently promoted partner Gregory Buckley handles construction and engineering disputes. Lucy Frith has joined Clyde & Co LLP.
