Brexit and the legal implications for businesses

Peter heads our Leeds Company Commercial Practice Group and Commercial team in Leeds, which was awarded the 2013 Corporate & Commercial team of the year award at the annual Yorkshire Lawyer Awards. He has substantial experience of advising upon significant long term commercial arrangements in both the public and private sector, including outsourcing, joint ventures, long term supply, distribution, PFI and PPP across a range of sectors including financial services, transport, manufacturing and waste.

Peter regularly advises clients including Heinz, Communisis, the Legal Services Commission, the Department for Transport, Parker Hannifin and MBNA and manages our relationship or the Commercial team's relationship with a number of these clients.

His recent experience includes advising HSBC on a global facilities management outsourcing; advising a client on the commercial aspects of its Europe wide business reorganisation; advising a manufacturing client upon a European payroll outsourcing; advising a top 30 FTSE 100 company upon a wide range of its contracts (particularly outsourcing and facilities management); advising on a joint venture agreement in relation to the nuclear new build programme; and advising upon a range of joint venture, outsourcing and affinity arrangements within the financial services sector.

On the public sector side Peter's experience includes advising Bracknell Forest Borough Council, Reading Borough Council and Wokingham District Council upon their £600m 25 year RE3 Waste PFI project; leading the team which advised Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority upon its £640m 25 year waste management and recycling contract procurement; leading the team which advised the Department for Transport on the re letting of the Cross Country rail franchise and the subsequent mobilisation of the "Midlands 3" franchises.

Peter is noted in Chambers as being “great value” and “really understands the job and just gets on with it”. Client comments about Peter include:

"It would be invidious to list the many tasks and challenges that have been over-come with the help of your team, but it should be recorded that your leadership, commitment and professionalism not just in a legal advisor role but also as an experienced project leader, not to mention your ability to work late and be available for consultations with a stressed Procurement Director, have played a major part in the successful completion of contract signing."

"With Peter McCormack it is his commercial acumen. Peter is a very clever guy who added a lot of value in some of the key commercial parts of the contract."

Brexit

The impact of Brexit will not be the same for all businesses. Our Brexit lawyers are working with a number of clients to help them with Brexit planning. We are helping them take steps to put themselves in the best possible position. For some clients, we have analysed the implications of Brexit on their business based on the different potential models of Brexit. We would be happy to discuss the potential implications of Brexit for your business too.

Listen to the Commercial contracts Brexit podcast

Listen to our podcast: Brexit –planning for uncertainty - "What if?" has become "what now?".

This is a short podcast from our Commercial team. Following the momentous vote to Brexit, we have two of our commercial experts, Tom Bridgford, one of our partners and Claire Stewart, a member of our professional support team, who are going to talk about how you can protect your business against some of the inevitable uncertainties that the UK will now be facing. We will also be hearing from Dan Roskis from our Paris office and Alex Niethammer from our Munich office about how Brexit will impact on clients in their jurisdictions.

Contractual risk analysis and Brexit proofing - Guiding businesses through Brexit

The UK’s momentous vote to leave the EU marks the dawn of an unprecedented period of uncertainty for business. Whilst the precise nature of the UK’s future relationship with the EU and the impact this will have on business and trading arrangements is currently unknown, it is generally agreed that there are five models for the future UK/EU trade structure post Brexit. The impact each of these models would have on business differs significantly.

Contractual risk analysis and Brexit proofing for your IT and Outsourcing arrangements - Guiding businesses through Brexit

Using our Brexit Risk Analysis, we can help you answer your questions, understand the potential risks to your trading arrangements arising from Brexit (whether pricing, currency, regulatory, tariff, people, data or otherwise) and put measures in place to protect against those risks.
