Diane Gilhooley is the global practice group head for human resources and pensions at Eversheds Sutherland, as well as the firm’s education sector lead.

A Partner at the firm since 2003, Diane leads a global team providing complex, multi-jurisdictional advice across the entire breadth of international employment, labor and pensions issues.  She advises on a full range of employment law issues, including re-organisations, staff discipline and performance, worker status and contact issues, employment contracts (including contracts for vice-chancellors at a number of Universities), issues relevant to the Instruments and Articles of Government and equality/diversity issues.

Diane has considerable expertise in providing advice higher and further education clients, is at the forefront of developments within the education sector and regularly consults on legislative changes and contributes to key conferences and publications within the sector.

In addition to her Global Practice Group and sector responsibilities, Diane embraces multiple roles at Eversheds Sutherland including membership of the firm’s Senior Management Team and International Steering Group. As well as writing for the Times Higher and other notable publications, she also delivers workshops at key sector conferences and presents on a variety of HR topics.

The group is highly regarded for its expertise in the financial services sector, advising on industrial relations issues and utilising its global network to handle international mandates. Recent work highlights include advising the BBC on issues arising out of its employment contract changes and related union negotiations, representing Govia Thameslink Railway in the High Court in injunction proceedings to prevent the train drivers' union from calling a strike on its Southern services, and handling the employment aspects of Charter Court Financial Services Group's IPO on the London Stock Exchange. Clients single out the 'vastly experienced' Martin Warren, who leads the labour relations group; industrial relations team head Marc Meryon, who is 'brilliant'; and the 'smart and commercially savvy' Elizabeth Graves. Diane Gilhooley leads the global practice from Manchester and Paul Fontes heads up the London group. Sophie White joined from Abbiss Cadre LLP, Fiona Bolton joined Simmons & Simmons and Gareth Wadley joined Gateley Plc in 2018.

The 'good all-round team' at Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP advises a range of educational institutions including universities and educational bodies on matters ranging from setting up overseas establishments to the merger of schools. Its comprehensive expertise spans high-level policy advice, in addition to advisory and disputes matters. It acted for a number of further education colleges on their extensive work participating in the national Strategic Area Review and also acted for the Association of Colleges and Havering Sixth Form College on a judicial review challenge to the decision of the Department for Education to approve a new sixth form college at a school in the Borough of Havering. Key team members include Glynne Stanfield, Alison Oldfield and Nicola Bennison. Simon Chamberlain specialises in property-related matters, and Ben Wood handles employment and governance. With a 'national reputation', Diane Gilhooley is the well-known head of the firm’s national and international education sector group.

Recent work includes advising Reigate College on its conversion to an academy, which involved assisting the college with pension, corporate and HR matters, as well as education law. The team also continues to assist ACS International Schools with an array of matters ranging from construction to IP, charity law and governance. The well-respected Diane Gilhooley  heads the practice; Ben Wood advises on employment and governance matters; and Helen Cairns has long-standing experience of working with academies and 'impresses with her industry knowledge'.

Glynne Stanfield  is an expert in education mergers and recently advised a 6th form college in Hampshire on its conversion to academy status. Nicola Bennison  is an expert in student-related issues and assisted the National College for High Speed Rail with procurement, pensions, governance and staffing issues, relating to the client’s new mobilisation programme. Mark Taylor was made partner in 2017, and advises on corporate, commercial and governance issues. Recent work highlights of his include advising Nottingham College on the financing behind its new build project in Nottingham City Centre.
