Career

Matthew is a corporate partner in Shearman & Sterling's Abu Dhabi office with a broad practice, particularly focusing on the energy sector, private capital and cross-border matters. His extensive experience includes joint ventures, farm-in arrangements, public and private acquisitions and equity capital raisings. Matthew provides commercial advice to a wide range of clients including majors, IOCs, NOCs, corporates, infrastructure funds, SWFs, family offices and private equity houses.

Matthew has worked with clients in the UAE since 2007 when he was based in Dubai.  He has also worked in Eastern Europe and was previously seconded to Genel Energy plc where he focused on upstream acquisitions and joint ventures.

Shearman & Sterling LLP handles a mixture of work, and in particular has close relationships with government-backed clients in Abu Dhabi. Matthew Powell advised Adnoc Distribution on forming a joint venture with Urban Foods to open a number of Géant-branded food stores in its petrol stations across the UAE. Marwan Elaraby, working with members of the firm's team in London, advised EFG-Hermes on its purchase of a 50% stake in Frontier Investment Management. Elaraby also assisted NMC Healthcare with forming a joint venture with Hassana Investment to enter the Saudi health market. Another member of the team is Rodney Cannon, who was previously group general counsel of Mubadala.

Dan Feldman, who handles energy projects work for banner clients, is a new partner promotion at Shearman & Sterling LLP. In oil and gas, Rodney Cannon and Matthew Powell advised Mubadala Petroleum on the purchase of an Egyptian concession from Eni for $934m - Powell also advised the client on numerous sales of interests in oilfields aggregating $7.9bn. Iain Elder, who divides his time between Abu Dhabi and London, is another notable name. Natural resources specialist Renad Younes is a new hire from Ashurst LLP: she 'puts her clients above everything - her insight from previous assignments and knowledge in the region is what makes clients choose her'.
