Mr. Milligan is a partner in the Litigation and Labor & Employment Departments of Seyfarth Shaw LLP and Co-Chair of the Trade Secrets Practice Group. His practice encompasses a wide variety of commercial litigation and employment matters, including general business and contract disputes, unfair competition, trade secret misappropriation and other intellectual property theft, franchise litigation, real estate litigation, insurance bad faith, invasion of privacy, consumer and employee class actions, wrongful termination, discrimination and harassment claims, wage and hour disputes, ADA and OSHA compliance, whistleblower and SOX cases, bankruptcy, and other business torts. He specializes in trade secret, non-compete, and data protection litigation and transactional work on a state, national, and international platform.


Mr. Milligan started his career at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP in October 2001. He began working at Seyfarth Shaw in June 2004 and made Partner in 2009. Mr. Milligan serves as a member of the State Bar of California Intellectual Property Law Section Executive Committee and is the Chair of the Trade Secrets Committee. He also serves as Chair of the Intellectual Property Committee for the ITechLaw Association and is the Vice Chair of the ABA Trade Secrets Committee. Mr. Milligan was selected as a Southern California Super Lawyer Rising Star in Business Litigation and Intellectual Property. He also served as a contributing editor of Trade Secret Litigation and Protection in California and is an author of chapters in Continuing Education of the Bar’s Trade Secrets Practice in California. He is also the editor of Seyfarth’s trade secret blog,

The 'client-focused' and 'pragmatic' Seyfarth Shaw LLP is well known for its work in trade secret disputes. Los Angeles-based Robert Milligan jointly leads the team and is highly skilled in handling trade secret misappropriation disputes. He represented US Foods in obtaining permanent injunctions against two former employees who breached restrictive covenants and misappropriated trade secrets. Also leading the team is Chicago-based Michael Wexler, who has extensive experience in trade secret and restrictive covenant law. He acted for Stryker Corporation in a lawsuit against a former employee who had misappropriated trade secrets. Other key figures include Atlanta-based Daniel Hart, Chicago-based Scott Humphrey and Erik Weibust, who works in the Boston office.
