Banking and finance

Within: Banking and finance

The team at Guevara & Gutiérrez S.C has been increasingly active in large-scale restructuring activities in the banking and finance sector: Ramiro Guevara assisted Grupo Financiero Bisa with the $300m reorganisation of all its companies. As well as continuing to provide regulatory advice to global financial institutions – such as Standard Chartered and Citibank – which have interests in Bolivia but are not domiciled in the country, the team continues to act for locally active international lenders such as International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Project finance and structured finance are other areas of particular strength. Guevara co-heads the practice with Jorge Inchauste in La Paz; while Enrique Barrios is the key contact in Santa Cruz. La Paz-based associates José Bernal and Alejandra Guevara are frequently active on high-value matters.

Within: Corporate and M&A

Guevara & Gutiérrez S.C has been handling a high volume of M&A for high-profile domestic and international clients and, accordingly, it has also been increasingly active in competition work. Energy, mining, consumer goods and manufacturing are all sectors in which the practice has notable expertise: recent mandates saw team co-head Jorge Inchauste assist Alicorp with its $200m purchase of Industrias del Aceite (as well as with its purchase, alongside Inversiones Piuranas, of ADM SAO); while fellow co-head Ramiro Guevara advised Italian manufacturer Bottero on $4m-worth of commercial contracts relating to the construction of a glass-processing factory in Bolivia. Other clients include Verizon, Cervecería Boliviana Nacional and PepsiCo. Inchauste, Guevara and senior associates José Bernal and Alejandra Guevara comprise the core team in La Paz, supported by competition expert Zoya Galarza; in Santa Cruz, energy is a key strength, with Enrique Barrios and Rodolfo Mercado assisted by senior associates Jairo Guiteras and Julio Landivar.

Within: Energy and natural resources

Based primarily in Santa Cruz, the practice at Guevara & Gutiérrez S.C is led by regulatory and contracts expert Enrique Barrios, and counts Petrobras Brazil, Repsol and Occidental Petroleum among its clients. Oil and gas, particularly in the upstream space, is a core strength of the group, which also has experience in energy-sector international arbitration as well as in regulatory and cross-border transactional work. The team largely acts for private-sector clients in negotiations (and disputes) with state-owned entities. Barrios acted for YPF Argentina on a $60m oil and gas services agreement concerning the Charagua area, as well as assisting the client with procurement-related regulatory matters. Corporate work and capital-raising matters are often led by Rodolfo Mercado and Ramiro Guevara, who are based in Santa Cruz and La Paz respectively; while senior associate Julio Landivar frequently advises oil and gas companies on corporate and contractual matters. Renewable energy, especially in the wind sub-sector but also – increasingly – in the solar power segment, is a growing strength of the department.
