Jean Paul Chabaneix is the partner in charge of the Banking and Finance, Projects and, Oil and Gas practice groups.


With more than 25 years experience in cross-border transactions, Jean Paul Chabaneix’ expertise includes M&A, project finance, corporate finance, securities and oil and gas. He heads the Banking/M&A Practice and the Oil and Gas areas at the Firm. He also has experience as an international arbitrator, particularly in ICSID disputes.

Few headline deals come to the Peruvian market without Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano – Abogados' presence at the table, the result of an 'excellent' and 'constructive' team and enviable client roster. It is the firm of choice for most of the country's top domestic banks -such as Credicorp Capital, Banco de Crédito del Perú, BBVA Continental and Scotiabank- for both regulatory and transactions. It also advises major international financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, HSBC, BNP Paribas, Santander and DNB Bank and some of the country's prime borrowers, namely Graña y Montero and Southern Copper Corporation. The practice's eight partners are led by the  'exceptionalJean Paul Chabaneix, and includes project finance star Fernando MolinaLuis Enrique Palacios (who is lauded for his corporate finance expertise), and regulatory specialist Gino Sangalli. Counsel Paul Castritius, formerly of the Peruvian Securities and Exchange Commission, brings public sector capital markets experience to the firm. Recent deal highlights included working alongside London's Clifford Chance in advice to Natixis, American General Life Insurance, Pacific Life Insurance and MetLife on hybrid financing (comprising a $75m loan and $100m bond issue) granted to transmission line concessionaire CCNCM. On the borrower side, the firm represented Tahoe Resources on its $200m financing from Scotiabank and HSBC Securities, and avocado distributor Mission Produce on its $275m loan from Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The firm also provided local law advice to TMF Group in the $1bn international debt issuance by DirecTV, a deal led by Palacios. Augusto Cáceres, who was raised to the partnership in July 2019, and associates Efrain Salazar and Nicolás Cornejo are also very well regarded. Regulatory lawyer Diego Peschiera moved to CMS Grau.

'Arguably the market leaders', Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano – Abogados is a dominant force in high-end, complex transactions. Clients praise its sophisticated offering that is 'best in class for partner involvement', as well as its legal knowledge, responsiveness and communication. The firm is advising Sempra Energy on the Peruvian aspects of the proposed sale of its Peruvian and Chilean business units, including Luz del Sur - potentially the largest deal of 2019 in Peru. Leading the advice is the firm's head of M&A Jean Paul Chabaneix, who 'provides spectacular insight and service on a client's most challenging problems' and 'gets the deal done', and Jorge Trelles, who 'identifies the main needs of each in-house counsel', 'drafts particularly well' and is 'of essential assistance in negotiations'. Other deal highlights saw a team led by Eduardo López act as local counsel to Belmond on its $3.2bn acquisition by Louis Vuitton; while Trelles teamed-up with Luis Enrique Palacios to advise I Squared Capital on its $341m acquisition of a 25% stake in power generation companies Kallpa Generación and Samay I from Energía del Pacífico. Other key individuals in the practice group, one of the largest in the market, are: Luis Carlos Rodrigo Prado, a market leader in mining M&A; Ramón Vidurrizaga, who heads the general corporate practice; Sandro Fuentes and Alfonso Montoya. The team has also been strengthened with Augusto Cáceres' July-2019 elevation to the partnership; he focuses on M&A, corporate and project finace, venture capital and technology.

Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano – Abogados has a pre-eminent offering, particularly in the mining-projects segment where top-flight lawyers from across the firm's finance, regulatory and mining practices combine to provide 'unparalleled experience in project finance transactions', 'unique dedication'insightful advice' and 'full support, especially in the final mile'. The practice acted as local counsel to Minsur subsidiary Marcobre on the $900m project finance for the development of its landmark Mina Just mining project. In the energy arena, the team acted for the lenders syndicate in the $175m hybrid project financing for the 220kV Cajamarca transmission line. The deals were led by Jean Paul Chabaneix and Fernando Molina respectively, the pair are described as the 'best project finance team in Peru and one of the best across Latin  America'. Other members of the 'fantastic' and 'commercial team' include head of mining Luis Carlos Rodrigo Prado and project finance-focused Juan Diego De Vinatea.

Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano – Abogados has one of the largest teams in the market, combing the specialist regulatory expertise of 'true star' Jorge Pérez-Taiman and Jenny Caldas (environmental law), with market-leading transactional practitioners from across the firm, such as Jean Paul Chabaneix, who has accumulated considerable oil and gas know-how. The result is a fully-comprehensive offering, attracting big-ticket instructions. The team is currently advising Gases del Pacifico (GDP) on all issues related to its $250m project to transport LNG by road for subsequent regasification and distribution as piped natural gas; and representing Colombia's Promigas on its participation in a government tendering process to supply natural gas to several regions in central/south Peru; both matters are led by Pérez-Taiman. Specialised senior associates Carolina Noriega and Eduardo Ramos are also both highly regarded. An enviable client list includes Exxon Mobil, Shell Operaciones Peru, Repsol and Sempra Energy.
