General commercial disputes

Paul Hastings LLP is a popular choice for large multinational companies and financial institutions in complex commercial disputes. It is particularly active in key jurisdictions including New York, Washington DC and California, though it is equipped to handle cases across the length and breadth of the country. The global litigation practice is chaired by Barry Sher, who, acting alongside Jodi Kleinick, achieved the dismissal of a class action brought on behalf of investors in two funds, who claimed to have lost nearly $1bn as a result of the funds manager's involvement in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme. In San Francisco, John Phillips successfully represented General Electric in a novel federal claim wherein an employee alleged that the design of GE's boiling water reactors resulted in radiation exposure. Houston-based Samuel Cooper defended eight former directors at Baker Hughes, who allegedly misappropriated a proprietary share-pricing model with the intention of using that model for insider trading. Also recommended is Kurt Hansson, who has extensive experience in breach of contract, securities, fraud and trade secrets disputes. Named partners are based in New York unless otherwise stated.
