Career

Partner Paul M. Thompson focuses his practice on white-collar criminal defense, congressional investigations and appellate matters. He is a current member of the Firm-wide Management Committee and a former member of the Firm’s Executive Committee. From 2011 to 2015, Paul served as partner-in-charge of the Washington, DC office. Drawing on his experience as a former federal prosecutor (2002 to 2005), Paul has represented clients that are the subject of criminal investigations and civil enforcement proceedings, with a focus on antitrust criminal investigations, health care matters and public corruption cases. He has significant experience representing clients in criminal antitrust investigations conducted by the US Department of Justice (DOJ). In addition, he represents health care providers in matters involving allegations under the False Claims Act and the Anti-Kickback Statute. Among other matters, he successfully represented the former majority leader of the New York State Senate in a high-profile trial in US district court.

The full-service antitrust practice at McDermott Will & Emery LLP is spread across the country, with attorneys in Washington DC, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Orange County, and 'advises clients with a full and accurate understanding of the facts'. A team led by Stefan Meisner is currently acting for a Japanese auto parts manufacturer in a multi-district litigation in the context of the global DOJ investigation, and practice head Raymond Jacobsen, Jr. is currently working with Paul Thompson to defend Impax Laboratories in multi-district litigation arising from the pricing of generic drugs. In Chicago, David Hanselman assisted Eagle Materials and its subsidiary with class action complaints filed by direct and indirect purchasers of plasterboard.
