Position

Ian McDonald is head of the Commercial Dispute Resolution practice in London, and is the former head of the restructuring, bankruptcy and insolvency practice in London. He acts for banks and funds, particularly in high value disputes relating to loan structures, structured finance and derivatives, many of which have cross-jurisdictional elements. He has advised on cases for financial institutions involving allegations of mis-selling, misconduct, misrepresentation, deceit, fraud, breach of duty, contractual interpretation and breach of transactional documentation, as well as on matters of enforcement, rectification and restitution. He is co-leader of the firm’s International Banking and Financial Litigation Action Group. Ian also acts for licensed insolvency practitioners, noteholders, lenders, creditors, directors and borrowers in contentious insolvency matters.

Mayer Brown International LLP’s 'team is extremely dedicated, efficient and very pleasant to work with'. The practice acts for investment banks, investment funds, asset managers, issuers of listed debt securities, and corporate trustees in high-value, high-profile disputes involving the wholesale financial markets, which usually have cross-jurisdictional elements. The practice is particularly known for disputes surrounding derivatives and structured products, commodities and financial crime. It represented UBS in litigation in London against German water services provider, Kommunale Wasserwerke Leipzig, that arose from the enforcement of structured finance transactions. Ian McDonald leads the practice, of which Alistair Graham , Susan Rosser and Mark Stefanini are also key members. The counsels to note are Ruth Malone, Dan Hart and recently promoted Chris Roberts. White-collar partners Sam Eastwood and Jason Hungerford were hired from Norton Rose Fulbright, while David Allen retired from the practice.
