The well-balanced debt practice at Latham & Watkins LLP secures a steady stream of issuer and manager-side mandates, which it handles from its well-staffed offices in New York, Chicago and Washington DC. The already sizeable department grew further in 2017 with the hire of New York-based partner Wenchi Hu, who was formerly at the SEC, as well as the partner promotions of Washington DC-based Brandon Bortner and New York-based Benjamin Stern. Chicago’s Manasi Bhattacharyya was also elevated to counsel. New York-based global corporate chair Marc Jaffe is widely recognized as ‘a star in the area’ and advised JP Morgan Securities on Moody’s two-tranche notes offering totaling $1bn. Also in New York, ‘great lawyerMichael Benjamin and Stelios Saffos assisted Bank of America Merrill Lynch with Staples’ $1bn notes offering. Jaffe led many of the group’s most high-profile recent deals, including assisting Goldman Sachs with Canada Goose’s C$340m dual-listed IPO on the NYSE and the Toronto Stock Exchange and its $259m follow-on offering - New York-based Ian Schuman and Boston’s John Chory co-led the IPO advice. In another bank-side headline, Washington DC-based Rachel Sheridan acted for Bank of America Merrill Lynch as underwriter on Emerald Expositions Events’ $303m IPO. Among its work for issuers, Jaffe and Schuman advised Camping World on its $249m IPO and $303m common stock offering. The group also includes global capital markets co-chairs Witold Balaban in New York and Chicago-based Cathy Birkeland. Wenchi Hu joined the New York office in 2017 from the SEC.

Among its issuer-side work, global corporate head Marc Jaffe - ‘pre-eminent in the capital markets space’ - and Senet Bischoff, who are both in New York, advised Scientific Games Corporation on its $1.1bn tack-on offering of senior secured notes. In Washington DC, Patrick Shannon assisted BlueLine Rental with its $1.1bn offering of second lien notes. The firm also houses a heavyweight underwriter-side practice, which recently advised HSBC on two senior notes offerings by Nova Chemical totaling $2.1bn - New York-based global capital markets co-chair Ian Schuman led that work. Jaffe and Senet also advised JP Morgan Securities on WellCare Health Plans’ $1.2bn notes offering. Washington DC-based Jason Licht is also a key contact. The firm grew its capital markets practice in 2017 with the hire of Wenchi Hu from the SEC.
