Matthew Murchison is a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Latham & Watkins, where his practice focuses on communications and appellate matters.

Mr. Murchison advises clients on a range of regulatory, litigation and transactional matters in the communications sector. He has appeared before the Federal Communications Commission numerous times to represent clients on a variety of significant issues, including net neutrality, major transaction reviews, retransmission consent and spectrum policy. In addition, he has drafted key advocacy filings on these and other regulatory issues for clients in the broadband, video, wireless and satellite industries, and regularly counsels these clients on regulatory matters that affect their businesses.

Latham & Watkins LLP’s team handles high-profile regulatory and contentious work, and for some has ‘the best telecoms lawyers in the city’. Matthew Brill, James Barker and James Gorton lead the practice. Brill has extensive experience in telecoms and broadcasting disputes and regulations; Barker is particularly known for his work on spectrum auctions; and New York-based Gorton is highly skilled in transactional matters. John Janka is also a key figure and has strong expertise in spectrum controversies. Matthew Murchison was made partner and has a strong skill-set in regulatory issues and litigation. Recent highlights include advising the National Cable & Telecommunications Association on net neutrality proceedings as well as defending Charter Communications against allegations by the New York Attorney General that Time Warner Cable provided misleading broadband performance information to its customers. The firm worked with Comcast Corporation and NCTA together on the business data services ruling. The firm also defended Cox Communications against antitrust tying allegations, defended Ligado Networks in a spectrum dispute before the FCC, and advised ViaSat on obtaining spectrum rights. Litigator Gregory Garre represented Pandora and iHeartMedia in a complex copyright suit involving the streaming of music recorded prior to 1972.

The team is led by spectrum auctions specialist James Barker, telecoms transaction expert James Gorton and Matthew Brill, who represents satellite, telecoms and broadcasting companies in transactions. Barker recently advised Charter Communications on the FCC’s broadcast incentive auction and assisted Verizon with its 24.5% equity purchase of Dreamwork’s Awesomeness TV. Brill advised LogMeIn on its $1.8bn merger with Citrix’s GoTo business. John Janka is also a key figure, with notable expertise in transactional matters on behalf of broadband providers, satellite operators, media companies and broadcasters. He assisted Entercom with its tax-free merger with CBS Radio, advised Beasley Broadcast Group on its acquisition of Greater Media, and assisted ViaSat with its public offering of $6.5m-worth of shares of common stock as well as with the closing of a joint venture with Eutelsat involving satellite-based broadband services. Matthew Murchison, who was made partner in 2017, is also highly experienced transactions in this space. Netflix and MGM are also key clients. The team is based in Washington DC.
