At Latham & Watkins Gaikokuho Joint Enterprise, aviation finance specialist Hisao Hirose has recently represented a number of Japanese airlines and leasing companies in aircraft financing by way of leases for, amongst others, Boeing 747-800, Boeing 747-400F and Airbus A320 aircraft. New office managing partner Joseph Bevash recently relocated from Hong Kong to Tokyo. He and his team advised on the $2.7bn debt facility for the $3.71bn Hongsa lignite mine and power plant in Lao PDR. Michael Yoshii is also recommended for his expertise in cross-border financing transactions.

Latham & Watkins Gaikokuho Joint Enterprise’s corporate and M&A team is led by Michael Yoshii. Highlights included representing Chubu Electric Power Co in its acquisition of partial interests in five gas-fired power generation assets in the US from Tenaska; and Daiwa Capital Markets in connection with its $1bn acquisition of global convertible bonds and Asian equity derivatives businesses of KBC Group NV. In 2011, counsel Louis Rabinowitz transferred to Tokyo from the firm’s Hong Kong office. Satoshi Karashima has left the firm to work in-house at a financial institution.
Projects and energy

Latham & Watkins Gaikokuho Joint Enterprise’s new office managing partner Joseph Bevash relocated to Tokyo from Hong Kong bolstering the projects and energy team, which already included the mining and power-related project expertise of Michael Yoshii and Hiroki Kobayashi, who adds his experience in cross-border transactions to the group. Highlight work included advising Denham Capital Management in the project financing for GNPower’s 600-MW Mariveles coal-fired power facility, including a private port facility and associated facilities in the Philippines; and advising Jurong Aromatics Corporation Pte in connection with the development and financing of the Jurong Aromatics petrochemicals project.
