E&W - London

Jones Day’s London office is an integral part of the global firm and has more than 200 fee-earners in the centre of the City. Its lawyers have extensive UK and international experience and provide domestic and global clients with high-quality advice across the full range of legal services.

The firm: Jones Day London is at the centre of the firm’s European network, which includes offices in Brussels, Frankfurt, Madrid, Milan, Moscow, Munich and Paris and is fully integrated into the firm’s global network of 35 offices. Jones Day’s ‘one firm’ approach means all its clients benefit from the firm’s extensive multi-disciplinary international experience and obtain seamless access to the right legal resources from around the world whenever required.

Since the firm’s founding in 1893, Jones Day, in response to its clients’ needs, has grown from a small, local practice to one of the world’s largest international law firms. With more than 2,500 lawyers, including 400 in Europe and 200 in Asia, resident in 35 offices around the world, the firm counts more than half of the Fortune Global 500 among its clients.

Jones Day’s success stems from its key strengths: high-value client service; depth of people, experience and resources; and a one-firm organisation and culture that allows it to bring the best of the firm to every engagement, regardless of the location of the client or the details of their needs.

The firm’s commitment to client service is recognised in independent client satisfaction surveys year after year. Jones Day is the only firm to earn top ratings year after year in surveys by The BTI Consulting Group – no other firm has matched the first-place record. ‘2011 marks Jones Day’s sixth appearance in the number 1 spot – and 10th straight year as a leader in the BTI Client Service A-Team’ says BTI’s report. Additionally, the firm features in the top tables of The Legal Week Intelligence’s annual client satisfaction survey, ranking second of all international firms in 2009. In a four-year review of the survey, researchers commented ‘in three out of the last four years Jones Day has outperformed the UK magic circle firms in terms of quality of legal and commercial advice’.

Jones Day has been ranked number one globally in M&A league tables for the first half of 2011, maintaining a position it has held for 43 consecutive quarters.

  • US rules regarding offshore accounts

The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act 2010, enacted on 18 March 2010, imposes a new US withholding tax and reporting regime, known as the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). The FATCA regime applies generally to payments made after 31 December 2012, except on obligations (to be defined in future guidance) outstanding on 18 March 2012. Substantial effort is required by foreign entities to bring their worldwide operations and policies into compliance with the FATCA rules as of the effective date.
