Wong & Partners was hit last year with the departure of leading name and head of group, Christopher Lee, who left to form his own firm. However, 2009 saw the team act on high calibre deals, including advising R3 Capital Advisors on the sale of notes to peninsular Gold. It also has experience advising on pre-IPO financing, and joint venture agreements, for a strong client base featuring Citibank Berhad, CIMB Investment Bank Berhad and HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad. Wong & Partners has a good track record in this field, especially for advising global names, including R3 Capital Advisors on the $20m sale of secured convertible notes to Peninsular Gold. Azizul Adnan is the name of note here, after having lost former head of practice Christopher Lee in 2009.

Wong & Partners benefits from its status as a member firm of Baker & McKenzie LLP, with great experience advising on cross-border work. The corporate department is the firm’s largest practice group, and is very well respected in the market. Key work includes advising Abu Dhabi-Kuwait-Malaysia Investment on three separate high-profile public company takeovers. Brian Chia, Andre Gan and Munir Abdul Aziz are well-respected practitioners, described as ‘client-focused, pro-active, have good commercial acumen and strong commitment’.

Wong & Partners boosted its IP team with the recruitment of the experienced Brian Law, formerly of Law, Raj, Teh & Partners in 2008. The group has an impressive client base, including Biotech Corps, which instructed the team its technology license and transfer to biotech sub-centres across Malaysia. Abdullah Chan is new on the market, but Hamdi Abdullah is a recognised expert. Abdul Raman Saad & Associates is noted for Islamic REITs and bonds work. Highlights for Azmi & Associates include advising on the issuance of $212m worth of Sukuk al-Mudarabah and Sukuk al-Ijarah, while James Wong at Jeff Leong, Poon & Wong In Association with Deacons is recommended for experience in capital markets and Islamic instruments, having advised a number of telecommunications companies. Lee Choon Wan and Debbie Choa are the names of note at Lee Choon Wan & Co. Lee Perara & Tan’s Gerald G. Malaysia’s legal market consists primarily of domestic firms, as it remains a closed market, despite recommendations from the WTO.   • Tax Reforms Towards the Creation of an International Financial Center in Russia

    In December 2009 the Russian Parliament adopted important changes further promoting the Russian holding companies regime. Starting from January 1, 2011 Russian holding companies will no longer be required to meet the present 500 million ruble threshold for investments made into companies qualifying as “strategic investments” to receive tax benefits.

    Malaysia is a democratic country that practises Parliamentary Democracy. The country is headed by a constitutional monarch, His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as the Supreme Head of the country.
