Position

Jay is a partner with 25 years’ experience in the resolution of international disputes, co-chairs Baker Botts’ international arbitration and international disputes resolution group. His practice focuses on international arbitration and complex multi-jurisdictional litigation. Mr Alexander has served as lead counsel in arbitrations conducted under the auspices of many arbitral institutes, including the ICSID, ICC, LCIA, ICDR, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, Zurich Chamber of Commerce and the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board, as well as ad hoc and UNCITRAL rules proceedings. Among recent arbitral matters he has led are a multi-billion dollar telecoms disputes, a multi-billion dollar oil supply contract dispute, a $750m dispute regarding the enforceability of an English law guarantee, and various joint venture disputes in a variety of fields, including the financial services, automobile and petrochemicals sectors. He is also currently acting in several investor-state disputes with amounts at issue exceeding US $100bn. Mr Alexander has conducted arbitrations under public international law, as well as the laws of many countries including Russia, Brazil, England, US and Korea. He is also on the ICDR roster of arbitrators and has served as a judge on the International Court of Appeal of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile.

Career

Qualified 1986; made partner at present firm 2011. Following law school, Mr. Alexander clerked for present Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg while she was serving on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He then joined Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin, LLP, where he remained until joining Baker Botts in 2001.
