Specialist in structured finance transactions, debt restructurings and special situations cases, and mergers and acquisitions. He has extensive experience in the structuring and implementation of a variety of restructuring transactions, such as debts renegotiation (amend and extend), extrajudicial recoveries (recuperação extrajudicial), distressed fundraising (such as DIP financing), as well as investments, assets sale/acquisition (including as ‘isolated productive units’, knows as UPI sale), distressed credit/NPL trading and M&A transactions in general. He has represented creditors in general, debtors in debt restructurings and extrajudicial recoveries and investors (such as strategic, local and international hedge funds and private equity investors). He has provided legal assistance to companies, banks, investment funds and investors in structured and complex corporate finance transactions, local and cross border, including syndicated loans, asset-based finance transactions, securitization transactions and trading of credit portfolios (including non-performing). He conducted important M&A transactions involving financial and non-financial institutions. He also advise clients on regulatory matters related to banking, finance and capital market regulation.


Portuguese and English.


Admitted to the Brazilian Bar and New York Bar Association. Member of International Bar Association (IBA), Brazil Turnaround Management Association (TMA) and the INSOL International. He currently acts as an Alternate Member of the Board of Directors of TMA Brazil.


Received his LL.B from Universidade de São Paulo, postgraduation degree in Insurance Law from Fundação Getulio Vargas and LL.M. from University of Virginia.

The ‘experienced’ eight-partner banking and finance group at Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados has recently handled numerous debt restructurings. Its client portfolio includes banks such as Banco Bradesco, Banco do Brasil and Itaú Unibanco, as well as other financial institutions and insurers. On the borrower side, the firm advised Vale Canada on securing a €200m public loan from the French Republic. Another highlight was assisting ABBI, the Brazilian national association of international banks, in commenting on the proposed regulation of cybersecurity and the hiring of IT services by financial institutions. Renato Gomes Ribeiro Maggio is ‘a great choice for complex financing agreements’, and is recommended along with José Ribeiro do Prado Júnior and Adriano Schnur Gabriel Ferreira. Renata Martins de Oliveira Amado has been acting as outside counsel to Telefônica Brasil and others as creditors in the ongoing Oi Group judicial recovery. In another complex case, José Ribeiro do Prado Júnior and Carretero represented Banco Bradesco, Banco do Brasil and Banco Indusval in the debt restructuring of Unigel Group, which has seen the existing security agreement split into three independent parts to accommodate three groups of creditors.
