Position

Victoria is an Associate who specialises in education law. She has extensive experience of assisting schools and colleges converting to academy status, with a particular focus on the governance and commercial aspects of conversion. Victoria also provides advice to a number of schools, academies and colleges on a range of student-related matters, especially those which are, or are likely to become, contentious, including admissions, discipline, exclusions, special educational needs and discrimination claims. 

Victoria’s recent experience includes:

  • separately advising a number of schools and existing multi academy trusts who wish to join or develop trusts with a mix of community and church schools
  • assisting a primary academy to respond to a local and national media story raised by the parents of an ex-pupil and to respond successfully to a formal complaint raised by the parents with the Information Commissioner’s Office
  • advising a mixed church and community multi academy trust that wishes to change the designation of one of its schools to become a faith school
  • supporting academies to make changes to their admissions arrangements

Browne Jacobson LLP advises on a broad range of education matters such as MAT conversions, alternative structures, and acquisitions and mergers. It also provides human resources (HR) advice to schools on matters such as redundancies and restructures, disciplinary and grievance, unfair dismissal, discrimination, performance management, contractual issues and employment policies. Julia Green heads the team in Exeter and focuses academy conversions. Victoria Hatton advises on governance, the corporate aspects of academy conversions and contentious issues such as admissions, discipline, exclusions, special educational need and discrimination claims. Daniella Glynn advises maintained, academy and independent schools on a broad range of HR issues. Rachel Billen focuses on employment law matters including TUPE aspects of academy conversion. Recent highlights include advising Lighthouse Schools Partnership in increasing the size of its MAT portfolio in Bristol, which involved complex negotiations with the local authority. Other clients include Westcountry Schools Trust, South West Bristol Co-operative Learning Trust, Exmouth Community College and Keskowethyans Multi Academy Trust.
