Nick is the partner leading the Birmingham education team. He has over 10 years’ experience in the sector and is nationally recognised for his expertise in providing governance and strategic board advice.

In terms of highlights for client wins, during the last year Nick has led our team who pitched for and were appointed by Outwood Grange Academies Trust (nationally recognised MAT) and Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (a leading MAT in the West Midlands who’s CEO has recently being appointed Chair of the Teaching Schools Council). These are both key appointments for the team both nationally and regionally.

Nick has an established network of key individuals and influencers in the sector. He has continued supporting the sector by leading on numerous thought leadership projects. During 2018 Nick led on the launch of our new podcast channel EdInfluence which is aimed at strategic leaders in the sector (available on both Itunes and Podbean). The list of speakers in the first year demonstrates the depth and strength of the network Nick and sector Head, Mark Blois, have in the sector (eg the General Secretaries of both ASCL, NAHT, the Chair of the Teaching School Council, the CEO of Confederation of Schools Trusts and Ian Livingston and innovative and entrepreneur recognised as a leading figure in the UK gaming industry).

Nick has continued to provide strategic board advice to many of our group clients, regularly attending Board meetings to provide advice and guidance and supports board strategy events and horizon-scanning events. He has also extensively written guidance on governance, academy groups and school collaboration for ASCL, NGA, FASNA and ISBL.

Browne Jacobson LLP provides 'five-star service every time' across areas such as company structures, academy conversions, governance, safeguarding, funding and land issues. It is advising on the creation of the Westcountry Schools Trust, which involved the transfer of six schools. In other work, it is handling whistleblowing issues, a disability discrimination claim and parental complaints. The highly experienced Mark Blois heads the education team nationally and Nick Mackenzie, who specialises in governance and corporate matters, heads the Birmingham team and has 'exceptional knowledge of the sector and is always able to provide sound, clear advice'. Other key partners include Adrian Shardlow, Richard Freeth and Dai Durbridge, 'who is just an outstanding presenter who can make the dullest of topics interesting'.

Browne Jacobson LLP 's repertoire in education includes advising on employment, property and governance issues. Nick Mackenzie heads the team and recently advised Pershore High School on its conversion into a multi academy trust and the establishment of new governance arrangements. He also assisted The Mercian Trust with setting up a new multi academy trust, which incorporated both Queen Mary’s Grammar School and Queen Mary’s High School. Academy conversions expert Richard Freeth is also a key figure, who advised Everton Football Club on its arrangements with a nearby MAT, the DfE and ESFA, which involved supporting the club’s academy players with their educational needs. Helen Badger works on employment matters and advised a multi academy trust on a grievance and whistle-blowing investigation.
