Position
Paul leads a Carey Olsen banking and regulation team focused on the needs of Jersey's banks and regulated financial institutions. This team works alongside other teams within the Carey Olsen corporate group focused on transactional work originating outside of the island. Paul draws on more than 25 years' experience both as an in-house banking lawyer and as a specialis t banking regulatory lawyer in private practice. His practice covers work which includes support for Jersey lending, the taking of Jersey security, loan-workouts, security enforcement, debt restructuring, bank start-ups, mergers, reorganisation and cessations, regulatory advice and support, and the drafting and review of client agreements. Paul has particular expertise in regulatory issues arising from anti-money laundering legislation and conduct of business compliance obligations. Recent work undertaken has included: lead offshore counsel to a leading European Bank, co-ordinating the integration of a recently acquired custody operation as part of new branch set-ups in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man; representing a corporate trustee in defending and responding to an application by the Jersey regulator to wind-up several property funds; Jersey counsel to the lead lender and security trustee in relation to the work-out and enforcement of loans and security interests due from and granted by the Formula 1 holding structure; and acting for BBVA on the cessation of its Jersey bank and trustee business.
Career
Paul qualified as an associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in 1977 while working with NatWest Plc. He qualified at the English Bar in 1983, qualified as a Jersey Advocate in 1996 and joined Carey Olsen as a partner in 1998.
