Browell Smith & Co is a leading North East law firm that acts for clients both locally and nationally.
The firm: Senior partner Philip Browell recently explained: ‘The firm was established with the intention of serving the trade unions, its members and local communities. We specialise in claims relating to personal injury, asbestos-related diseases and industrial/occupational diseases on behalf of claimants. The firm also has a fantastic reputation in handling cases relating to clinical negligence, employment law, family law, wills, trusts and probate, conveyancing and remortgaging, community care and welfare benefits.’
Browell added ‘We are extremely proud of the success of the firm, and the formidable reputation we have built up as a key player in the legal field.’
The firm has 10 offices throughout the Northern Region and the UK. The firm employs over 130 staff. Browell commented: ‘we see having a multitude of branch offices as a way of enhancing the first class legal services we already are proud to provide to people of the region.’
Types of work undertaken: The firm’s most rapid area of growth and development has been in the personal injury and industrial disease fields, where it acts both for trades union clients and their members as well as for the general public. In particular, the National Union of Mineworkers, GMB and TGWU. The firm also acts for NUM (COSA), NACODS and the National Association of Councillors. Browell Smith & Co maintains high professional standards in all its areas of practice and in its dealings with other members of the legal profession.
The firm’s personal injury department, under the guidance of partners Brian Freeman, Philip Davison and Kate Virica accommodates an ever-increasing volume of new instructions. All types of personal injury work including road traffic accidents are carried out. The firm also deals with fatal injury cases, and cases relating to holiday injuries and accidents abroad, particularly in the US.
Industrial disease expertise covers such areas as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, under the guidance of partner Janet Cooper and vibration white finger under the guidance of associate Stephen Browell, as well as asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis and pleural thickening. The firm also continues to offer a comprehensive welfare benefits advice service to its clients through its expanded department in Newcastle.
Matrimonial and childcare work under partner Derek Pack also continues to develop. In addition, partner Derek Pack, an experienced family lawyer, is one of only 15 lawyers in the region able to offer collaborative law – a means of resolving matters arising out of breakdown of relationships without going to court.
The firm’s employment department under senior partner Brian Freeman and department supervisor Allyn Walton continues to grow. The department deals with all types of employment law claims in the Employment Tribunals. The department has had a number of high profile successes and now undertakes work in both the UK and for one of its trade union clients in Brussels.
Conveyancing and remortgaging work continues to develop at the Annitsford office with Rodger Wilkinson under the guidance of partner Derek Pack.
The firm has invested heavily in web-based technology, both for litigation and property transactions, allowing all parties involved in a property transaction to follow the progress of the transaction, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by accessing a secure website.
The firm’s wills, trusts and probate department under the guidance of associate Stephen Browell continues to grow rapidly at the Newcastle office.
The clinical negligence department continues to expand under Dr Nicholas Wilkes who is a medically qualified clinical negligence specialist solicitor. More recently, Dr Wilkes has been joined by Clare O’Leary, who is also a specialist clinical negligence solicitor and member of the Law Society Clinical Negligence Panel.
Senior partner Philip Browell recently commented: ‘We look forward to further progression of the firm over the coming 12 months.’
