Position

Rebecca Sherwin is head of the real estate team. Rebecca also heads up the real estate finance team from a real estate perspective. She has worked with the firm for in excess of 15 years and provides specialist and dedicated real estate support for our leading banking clients in relation to the real estate aspects of their lending transactions. Rebecca works closely with the banking, construction and planning teams in providing advice for the funding of commercial and residential investment and development. She has experience of acting for lenders on real estate finance transactions with a variety of deal sizes. Rebecca’s particular expertise is advising on the lending of large portfolio investment transactions and development finance. Recent transactions have included: project managing and advising on the real estate aspects relating to the provision of a £60m acquisition and investment facility for the purchase of a large agricultural production portfolio; advising on the real estate aspects of a £17m facility to a student housing operator. The facilities were secured over a portfolio of 76 properties in Wales and the North West; advising a property company on the real estate aspects of a £48, term loan facility to refinance existing loans on 24 investment properties and fund the acquisition of a portfolio of the development properties.

Gateley Plc handles a range of transactions for borrowers and lenders, including MBO finance and non-bank lending advice. Andrew Madden  and Rebecca Sherwin (who also heads the firm's real estate finance practice) advised Clydesdale Yorkshire Bank as financiers of Evac+Chair’s MBO, and in the borrower space Madden advised Seafresh Group on a refinancing, which included securities over assets in both the UK and US and inter-creditor agreements involving the company’s Thai owners. Carol Betts advised HSBC on a £13m loan to a Manx company to purchase the Thomas Cook headquarters in Peterborough via a BVI structure.

Gateley Plc handles a mix of work, with a particularly strong roster of work for housebuilders. Callum Nuttall  advised Harworth Group on promoting a scheme to develop 3,000 homes near Derby, while Richard Pettifor continues to advise the consortium backing the Langley Sustainable Urban Extension, which is a proposed 6,000-unit residential development in the West Midlands. In addition, Tim Ledger is acting for Keepmoat Homes on an £80m development on the banks of the River Soar in Leicester. Pamela Scott advises a consortium of two housebuilders and a social housing provider on the purchase of sites as part of the Hull Citywide Framework. Robert Thompson is also a name of note for major house-building developments, while Ray Simpson advised Regal on financing its plan to construct Birmingham’s tallest residential tower. Away from housebuilding, Pettifor advises Mountpark Logistics on a speculative commercial development in Warrington, and Soulplane on developing a logistics property near Manchester Airport. James Madill advised Avignon Capital on the acquisition of a long-term lease of the arts complex in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter. Rebecca Sherwin advises HSBC on real estate finance matters. James White advised Gymshark on letting a new headquarters in Solihull. Andrew Mellor is now at Shakespeare Martineau LLP.
