Position

Guy is a leading individual and partner in Gateley’s national employment team. He heads the department’s offering in London and has extensive experience of both contentious and non-contentious employment law, having specialised in this area of practice for national and international clients for more than 26 years. Guy operates in a broad range of sectors but concentrates principally on finance, retail, leisure and public health. In the latter case Guy is Gateley’s lead partner for the British Medical Association, for whom he has been the principal lawyer for more than eleven years, providing assistance on an individual and collective basis across the UK, including high-profile litigation and judicial review applications. Guy has a Masters Degree in employment and trade union law and has particular experience in advising clients on acquisitions, restructurings and various outsourcing projects. Guy has also contributed to various publications including ‘Personnel Today’, ‘Estates Gazette’, ‘Financial Times’ and other mainstream daily newspapers. Notable cases in the recent past include the successful defence of a multimillion-pound equal pay claim, strategic advice on the EU restructuring of a global Japanese company headquartered in Tokyo, advice to a foreign government on the restructuring of its global operations and placement of embassies in various EU jurisdictions, together with the provision of representation in a number of disability and sex discrimination claims, including the dismissal and subsequent professional disqualification of a social worker on alleged child abuse claims. He is also well-known for his work with multi-site operations in the retail sector, having represented a leading household name in a restructuring programme to close a number of sites and reduce its workforce, which included negotiating with the Welsh Assembly.

Trained: Belmont & Lowe; qualified 1991; Hambro Legal (Now Capita) 1993-98; KJD (now Freeth Cartwright) 1998-2000; Halliwells 2000-10; Gateley, partner 2010 to date. He is also admitted as a solicitor in the Republic of Ireland.
