Position

Andrew’s main area of practice is claims arising from the carriage of goods by sea, road and air, and other related areas, such as warehousing. As well as the full range of transportation issues, Andrew also regularly advises on related insurance matters. He recently acted for the successful Claimant in Glencore International AG v MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co SA (2017 Court of Appeal).
Publications of note: co-author of ‘CMR: Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods by Road’ (4th edition, 2017). 

Career

Trained Ingledew Brown Bennison & Garrett; qualified 1975; partner Gateley 2008 to date. After qualifying, Andrew took a lecturing post for several years before returning to the City. Founding partner of Holmes Hardingham 1979.

The team represented Fulton Shipping in its high-profile dispute, the New Flamenco, which clarified the law relating to mitigation of damages for breach of contract. Additional highlights included acting for Pequod Associates as claimants on a dispute arising from the theft of containers from the port of Antwerp. Nicholas Walser is an ‘exceptional lawyer with extensive experience in shipping law’; Jane Hobbs handles marine insurance work; and Andrew Messent advises on claims relating to the carriage of goods.
