Testimonials

‘A fairly small corporate and banking team that does the same work as the larger Guernsey firms. The team is very responsive.’

‘Helen McGeogh has always been very knowledgeable and quick to respond.’

‘Gavin Farrell and Stuart Nash, very responsive and competent team.’

‘A small but very user-friendly legal team led by Gavin Farrell, a leading and highly experienced Guernsey advocate. A great alternative to some of the larger Guernsey firms.’

‘Flexible and extremely responsive. Always willing to help and available. I regularly recommend members of the team to others.’

‘The team was willing, pragmatic, available when we needed them and most importantly very understanding of our uncertainty and changing requirements. Their approach to us as an organisation was first class and in terms of billing they charged us exactly what they quoted – although I suspect our ever-changing needs resulted in them working much longer and harder than they budgeted!’

‘The team is dynamic, thorough and responsive. They provide quality and accurate advice and services in a timely manner.’

‘Gavin Farrell was straight to the point, not trying to charge the highest fees possible, but was concerned about us getting the right setup to complete our request. He was also very reactive as we changed the scope of the mandate, and immediately proposed several options that could be implemented while prudently assessing the risks related to each new request. Gavin Farrell has a good network in Guernsey and is able to propose plug and play solutions that work.’

Testimonials

‘Ferbrache & Farrell’s knowledge of Guernsey leases allowed us to take comfort in the exiting process, whilst giving us utmost confidence that the terms of the new lease reflected our best interests. At all times the team kept us informed and updated, whilst working in our best interests.’

‘Stuart Nash was our main point of contact. The attention to detail and explanation of any unknown legal terms made the whole process extremely comfortable to run through.’

‘The team is agile and works well to achieve results for our unconventional requests and complex business and property matters. They come forward with solutions that expedite the process of delivering the lease requirements we’ve had, whereas other firms we have dealt with through other businesses have spent a disproportionate amount on fees whilst seeing little practical return.’

‘Stuart Nash has been exceptional and efficient in the work that we’ve received. I have confidence in the lease assignments and mitigations he’s put in place with intelligent warranties and/or indemnifications that have quite literally saved us £100k in subsequent property disputes. Whenever I’m going out to bat on a property matter, I’m taking Stuart with me.’

‘F&F obviously have a well oiled system. They had a proactive approach to everything throughout the whole process.’

‘Alastair Hargreaves at Ferbrache & Farrell is very knowledgeable, he took me through the vagaries of commercial property transactions, and having only sold domestic properties before, this was very helpful. He assumed nothing and explained everything in detail and offered useful advice.’

Ferbrache & Farrell LLP is a full-service firm with offerings in the areas of corporate and commercial, dispute resolution, property and private client.

The firm: Ferbrache & Farrell LLP was formed in November 2016. All of its partners and staff originated from major offshore law firms (but all worked together at a prior firm) and bring a wealth of expertise. Included in the firm’s team are two of the most influential Guernsey advocates in their practice areas, namely Peter Ferbrache (dispute resolution) and Gavin Farrell (corporate), who was the only Guernsey lawyer inducted in more than one practice area in Guernsey for the inaugural 2018 Legal 500 Hall of Fame. A number of the firm’s lawyers have been independently recognised as leaders in their fields, and it works closely alongside local, national and international clients.

Due to the limited size of the Guernsey Bar, Ferbrache & Farrell LLP makes a particular effort to cultivate and support local relationships, as well as international intermediaries such as lawyers, accountants and professional advisers. As a Guernsey-only owned, boutique, highly-respected full-service commercial law firm, it is a welcome entrant in the jurisdiction. The firm is effectively conflict-free, and has the expertise and ability to assist clients. It is regularly referred work by other law practices, and equally refers work to other practices where of benefit to the client.

Types of work undertaken
Corporate and commercial: Ferbrache & Farrell LLP’s corporate and commercial department comprises well-known individuals who all previously worked together as one of the most highly-regarded and successful teams in the Guernsey office of an international offshore law firm. The department offers full-service corporate, banking and commercial cover and is able to advise on all aspects of Guernsey general corporate and commercial law, including banking and finance, regulatory, investment funds, asset management, mergers, acquisitions and restructuring and listings on The International Stock Exchange (TISE). Each member of the department has worked at major offshore law firms locally, gaining valuable experience in matters of Guernsey corporate and commercial law, either for Guernsey clients or as part of transactions with an international exposure. The team has worked with most of the leading law firms across a number of jurisdictions.

Dispute resolution: the dispute resolution department at Ferbrache & Farrell LLP has vast experience of local and international litigation and dispute resolution generally, gained from acting in complex local and international high-value disputes, both in Guernsey and throughout the world. All of the department’s advocates have practised at top City and offshore law firms and together, advocates Ferbrache and Jones boast over 60 years of contentious, semi-contentious and advisory experience. They have regularly acted for large corporations and high-net-worth individuals, and have appeared or been involved in many of Guernsey’s high-profile law cases.

Property: the property department is dedicated to providing tailored solutions that meet and exceed clients’ expectations. In addition, the property department provides support to colleagues in the corporate and dispute resolution departments on real estate-related technical points of law. The team’s areas of expertise encompass commercial and residential sales, purchases, leases, licences, boundary issues, property development documentation, legal title, population law queries and banking documentation. The team’s planning expertise means that it is often called upon to provide strategic advice, submit planning applications, deal with enforcement issues and conduct planning appeals. In environmental law matters, the team is often asked to provide legal opinions and assist clients with minimising and managing risk. The team has a deep understanding of the real estate marketplace and is alive to the importance of offering value for money.

Private client: the private client department is well-regarded and has a wealth of expertise, ensuring a first-rate client experience. The department deals with the drafting of realty and personalty wills and obtaining Grants of Probate. It also acts as professional executors and assists foreign lawyers who have requirements in this jurisdiction.

Diversity is about recognising difference (both visible and non-visible) and acknowledging the benefits this can bring to an organisation as opposed to adopting a ‘one size fits all’ approach which creates inequity and unfairness and stifles opportunities and development.

Since its inception, Ferbrache & Farrell has been committed to diversity, with our people-led culture openly recognising, welcoming and encouraging individuals from all walks of life to be either part of our team or to engage with us as valued clients.

Our aim is to provide the best quality legal service to our clients, regardless of their ethnic origin, religion, beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, ability, age, background or philosophies and we apply the same principles to those we recruit as well as our established team of employees, treating everyone equitably and fairly, without bias or prejudice.

The importance of healthy minds is paramount in our environment so our team’s work/life balance and ability to spend time with family and friends are very important to us so we closely monitor the hours they work and offer flexibility and support where it is needed, particularly for those with caring responsibilities or those facing significant life-changing events.

Individuals within our team have faced numerous personal challenges in the past but have done so with our full support and that of their colleagues.  Whilst there are numerous examples that we could recount, we must respect their privacy.  There is, however, one significant challenge that affected us all and that came in the form of the COVID pandemic when everyone rallied around to offer support.  As well as complying with legal requirements and internal procedures, everyone had choices to make based on their own individual beliefs and the individual decisions they made were acknowledged and respected by everyone.  We are proud to say that, despite the financial burden to the business, particularly during the height of the pandemic, the whole team pulled together and were retained on full pay, with those who could work, willingly working from home.  Communication was clear and regular and support was available to those who struggled to come to terms with the impact the pandemic was having on their lives.  As a result, we truly believe that this has increased our team’s loyalty and commitment to us as a Firm.  Following on from this experience, some individuals have moved to more flexible working arrangements and one of the team has become a trained Mental Health First Aider which we hope, going forward, will be a valuable resource for all in their time of need.

As an organisation, we are constantly having to overcome adversity in a rapidly changing world so we need diversity and inclusion to thrive.  Our Managing Partner, Alastair Hargreaves, who is a firm believer that individual backgrounds, experiences and identities bring tremendous value to the team, said “True diversity and inclusion bring more ideas to the table, more perspectives and greater decision-making for our service-led business.”
