Career

Trained at Thomas Edgar Verral Bowles and qualified in 1990. Mark joined Brachers in May 201 and was made Partner in 2014.

In 1995 Mark trained as a mediator and is accredited by the Family Mediators Association (FMA). In the late 1990s he was a trainer on the mediation foundation courses run by the FMA and maintains strong interest in mediation.

Mark undertook the training to work as a collaborative family lawyer in 2007 and believes strongly in providing clients with a range of different paths by which arrangements can be settled on separation and divorce. He is a family specialist accredited by Resolution, obtained in 2002.

His vast 26 years’ experience in family law means that he has an understanding and sympathetic approach to what can be a very difficult and upsetting time for the family. His background as a mediator means that he is focussed on reaching resolutions and an efficient and cost effective manner.

In 2015 Mark was interviewed by Sky News regarding the landmark contentious probate case Ilot v Mitson , where the Court of Appeal ruled that a disinherited daughter should be awarded a one third share of her mother’s estate despite the mother’s express wishes to the contrary.

Brachers fields 'a good strong team’ from its Maidstone base. Its recent work includes substantial nuptial agreements, a complex relocation case, domestic abuse and matrimonial cases with complicating international aspects including the removal of children from the jurisdiction. Financial cases often involve businesses and trust structures, where it is able to draw on the firm's tax, commercial and property experts. ‘Fantastic lawyers’ Mei-Ling Nab and Mark Leeson jointly head the team and associate Sophie Read undertakes both Children Act and financial proceedings.
