Position

Partner and national head of Construction, Engineering and Environmental. Construction specialist with particular expertise in advising on procurement strategies and in the drafting, negotiation and approval of development and funding agreements, construction and engineering contracts, partnering agreements, consultancy agreements and warranties for large scale refurbishment schemes, leisure, retail and office developments, residential and mixed use schemes, manufacturing projects and developments involving both mechanical and process plant, and projects within the public sector. Has been widely involved in regeneration initiatives and civil engineering projects and advises clients not only on contract drafting and negotiation but also in relation to contract management issues and claims avoidance. Clients include a number of commercial developers who operate on a national basis and also contractors, financial institutions and public sector bodies, in particular in the higher education field.

Addleshaw Goddard is ‘excellent for strategy, negotiation and quick responses.’ Andy McVeigh and the ‘excellent and smartJonathan Tattersall jointly lead the construction team. McVeigh heads the London construction team, specialising in residential development and student accommodation, where he continues to advise UPP on all of its student accommodation schemes; recent instructions include closing a £160m transaction with the University of Hull for the development and operation of 12 new student accommodation blocks. Julia Court joined the team from King & Wood Mallesons, and has been advising on infrastructure, early works contracts and construction issues relating to the Battersea Power Station £8bn redevelopment. Nancy McGuire is advising on the refurbishment of the Palace of Westminster, a UNESCO world heritage site and Grade 1 listed building. In the transactional space, Luke Baines has international experience includes working in Western Australia on major energy and resources projects, such as providing the construction documentation for a AUS$7bn iron ore mine and a US$34bn LNG project. Associate Keith Browne works for a number of the firm’s key clients, such as Britvic, ABF, Nationwide and Travelodge, providing advice on both civil and engineering projects, as well as PPP schemes. The transactional team also acts on some of the largest PFI disputes in the UK, being particularly strong in healthcare PFI, acting on the Peterborough (JLIF and Infrared), Norfolk & Norwich, Birmingham, Central Manchester, Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Liverpool hospital disputes.

Addleshaw Goddard provides a service that is ‘consistently of a high standard’ and handles local, national and international healthcare, infrastructure, regeneration and development construction projects and disputes. The team is advising Manchester Airport on the construction contracts required to support Phase 1 of its £1bn transformation programme at Manchester Airport, and is advising Omega Warrington on the £1bn development of a 575 acre site near Warrington, which involves a 25 year development partnership between Omega Warrington and the Homes and Communities Agency, supported by Warrington Borough Council. The team is also advising the House of Commons on its £160m Northern Estate Programme, which involves the adaption and conservation of a number of historic buildings in Westminster, and acts for Moda Living on several residential and mixed-used schemes in: Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool. National construction, engineering and environment group head Nancy McGuire is ‘superb’ and head of contentious construction Jonathan Tattersall is ‘very reliable, gives quick responses, and delivers good strategic advice’. Legal director Steve Ormand specialises in non-contentious construction and engineering mandates and managing associate Philip Withey, who is ‘very knowledgeable and experienced, provides good clear advice and support, and is dedicated and responsive’, handles in construction and engineering disputes, with a particular emphasis on PFI projects. The team was recently bolstered by the arrival of an eight-strong team from DWF, which includes Paul O’Kane (former national head of construction at DWF) and Paul Barge (former North West construction head at DWF).
