Position

Iain is the managing partner of Brett Wilson LLP and a prominent media and communications solicitor, dealing with defamation, privacy, data protection and harassment law.  He predominantly (but not exclusively) acts for claimants and has a wide and varied client base, including politicians, celebrities, HNWIs, corporates, local governments and professionals.  He advises the Law Society and numerous law firms across the country on defamation and harassment matters.

Iain heads up the firm’s media department, which is particularly well-known for its pioneering work in relation to online defamation, privacy and harassment. He acted for the claimants in two of the leading cases in this field: The Law Society & Ors v Kordowski [2011] EWHC 3185 (QB) (‘the Solicitors from Hell case’) and Tamiz v Google Inc [2013] EWCA Civ 68.

Iain and his team are often instructed by corporates or organisations facing sustained campaigns of harassment and have brought several representative proceedings to protect workforces.  Where the defendant is anonymous a disclosure (‘Norwich Pharmacal’) orders are sought.  In 2015 Iain succeeding in bringing the first defamation claim against ‘persons unknown’.

Iain acts for victims of privacy and data breaches, both deliberate (including phone-hacking and revenge porn) and accidental/negligent, often securing large settlements. 

Iain is also very familiar with criminal law, having previously practiced criminal litigation and adept at dealing with media law cases that touch upon this field.

Iain is a frequent commentator in the media and his comment is regularly sought by national newspapers and media outlets.  He has recently been interviewed by BBC News, ITV News at Ten, BBC Radio Five Live, The Times, The Guardian, The i, The Mirror, The New York Times amongst others.  He is the Law Society Gazette’s media columnist, wrote the privacy chapter on Westlaw Insight and contributes to Lewis/Nexis and Halsbury’s Law Exchange.
