Work Department

Head of EL, PL and Technical Claims

Position

This role involves the management of two of the smaller teams in the firm that I had previously supervised when we were included in the larger Part 7 department.

In the EL/PL team we deal with the vast majority of cases from the first enquiry to conclusion unless they become a serious injury. Therefore I review the initial enquiries to assess the prospects of success and allocate to a member of the team. I also supervise the team with the assistance of Rachel Armstrong who supervises the more junior staff.

In the Technical Team I review any cases referred through the Technical referral procedure to determine if they are suitable for the team and then supervise the cases through to conclusion.

I also deal with other management duties such as setting and reviewing performance targets and recruitment into the teams. I enjoy managing the combination of both teams as this gives the variety of more complicated RTA work and the non-RTA work, especially Employer’s Liability claims.

I am keen to expand both of these teams especially in light of the Government’s proposed reforms and the increase in the Small Claims Limit. In particular I am looking at ways to increase the amount of EL/PL cases into the firm both in relation to the existing types of EL/PL work we deal with and also to move into other similar areas of personal injury work.

I feel that given my experience with such cases I can help the more junior staff develop their legal skills whilst contributing to the expansion of the teams, despite the challenges which lie ahead. This includes supervising trainee solicitors when they complete their seat in my department.

Career

I am a solicitor with over 14 years post qualification experience dealing almost exclusively with personal injury cases. I joined the Complex Claims Team at Winns in August 2014 after nearly 10 years at Thompsons Solicitors where I dealt with various aspects of personal injury including Accidents at work, Industrial Disease and Road Traffic Accidents. Being a member of the Complex Claims Team I have focussed predominantly on Multi-Track work with a mixture of Road Traffic Accidents and the majority of larger value or complex Employer’s Liability cases, given my extensive background in this area. Since joining the firm, I have enjoyed success in securing significant settlements for our clients whilst ensuring that they have access to excellent rehabilitation services to aid their recovery. This has included a settlement of £155,000 last year for a client who suffered multiple injuries in a motorcycle accident.

In late 2016 I moved into more of a supervisory role within the firm and led two teams who deal with fast track EL/PL cases and higher value/more complex RTA cases. However I still maintain a small Multi Track caseload.

Winn Solicitors has substantial expertise handling claims pertaining to road traffic accidents while also dealing with employers’ and public liability claims. As an example for the latter, solicitor Simon Staton acted for a client who sustained a severe crush injury at work from an accident with a fork lift truck. In an illustration of its track record in road traffic accident cases, the team acted for a client involved in an accident where the defendant moved across the claimant’s path when overtaking, forcing him into a collision with a brick wall which led to a spinal injury and soft tissue disruption to the nerve roots. David Burn specialises in serious injury claims involving brain and spinal injuries, amputees, multiple orthopaedic injuries and fatalities. Also recommended are Joanna Amos, Paul Morpeth and trials team head Emily Sunderland. Former practice head and director Ghazala Bashey retired in 2018.
