Sheilah is a partner in Blake Morgan’s commercial IP/IT team in 2006 and specialises in commercial non-contentious IP/IT matters, handling a wide variety of contracts including agency, distribution, e-commerce, software development, licensing, facilities management, franchising, logistics, outsourcing and B2B and B2C terms of sale and purchase amongst others. Sheilah also handles data protection, freedom of information and consumer issues. She is experienced in running large software development projects (typically for customer-side clients), providing expertise for IP-rich corporate transactional work, and advising on the creation, exploitation and licensing of all types of IP. As an expert in the franchising sector, Sheilah advises on the full range of issues faced by those in the sector including setting up and managing franchise networks, complying with relevant regulatory requirements, dealing with underperforming franchisees and extracting franchisees from networks. Sheilah prepares and advises on the interpretation of standard form agreements for franchisors (franchise agreements, confidentiality and deposit agreements, business sale agreements) as well reviewing franchise agreement for prospective franchisees. Sheilah gives practical, straightforward commercial advice to her clients, who range from multi-nationals to small local businesses, charities and housing associations, university research and innovation teams and financial institutions. Her franchising clients include franchisors and franchisees in a variety of sectors including retail, leisure services, lettings and estate agencies, B2B and B2C services, domiciliary services, children’s groups and charities. Sheilah also acts for franchise consultants and industry associations. Sheilah is qualified in Scotland (2003) and England and Wales (2004). She is an Affiliate of the British Franchise Association and was the first solicitor in the UK to obtain the BFA’s Qualified Franchise Professional qualification. She is also a member of the Society for Computers and Law and Encouraging Women Into Franchising.

The practice also acts for a number of other universities, including Cambridge and Reading, for which it handles governance, administration, and charities regulation, among other matters. Sheilah Mackie in Southampton acts for a number of higher education clients and educational bodies.
